expressions of interest for Marlin YFT trolling out deep

ok with all this talk of yellowfin tuna out there etc, alot of us are into our gamefishing both light and heavy and have been toying with the option of an out deep trenches etc marlin yellowfin tuna trolling day etc, if we can get the right day, always better for a few boats heading out especially for the smaller type of boats, and can give a few people not so confident to head out and give it a go.
i know myself i have a 5.5m boat and will get out there on the right day, so lets see how many people out there are interested and as there will be a few deckies needed, people can put there names down for deckies.
day and dates will just have to see how we go depending on weather especially the way it is lately

I have a client who has a charter boat geared up for this sort of stuff. He is an ex Cairns Marlin man and was talking about doing something like this with his charter boat. Maximum 6 people. I'll check with him and see if he is interested so we can get a few more out there for a day. Not sure of the cost but I will find out if he can do a deal for the fishwrecked crew.

As for my boat, I am not so sure of the range if we head too far offshore (2 stroke engine), but would definately be keen on a specialist marlin / tuna trip as a deckie.

Sounds good Mako. Just got to pick the day.

Simo, your looking at around a 50km run each way than up to 60km trolling. Depends on how far you want to head.

Will have room for 3 people but those who put there hand up will need to understand that you may not turn a reel for the full day.

Time to dust the cobwebs off the Tiagras

yeah bouttimes pretty much on the ball, that sort of fishing, you can troll for days pump hundreds of litres of fuel into the tanks and get nothing, its not guaranteed but if your lucky its well worth it, was talking to tim on the phone and another thought for the ppl with fuel issues is we could always stay at rotto overnight top our fuel up there before heading out deep, that way the boat have the best range, and can always retop up just to get back home, so thats a thought for the 2 strokers

Depends

Wed, 2008-01-23 20:11

All depends on how much fuel your motor burns Simo. Have you ever taken any notice of how far you travel on a trip out and then checked your fuel when youve filled up.

You would want to be looking at a range of 200km to be safe. I have done this sort of distance just visiting the FADs with some bottom bouncing chucked in on the way home.

1/3 2/3 rule

Wed, 2008-01-23 20:19

1 third out two thirds back rule should apply. If you have an accurate fuel guage, you should be turning for home when you have used one third of a tank if you want to be safe. All it takes is for the weather to blow up and the half a tank you headed out on won't get you half the way back in.

Simo, work out what you use

Wed, 2008-01-23 20:40

Simo, work out what you use going to the containers than double that. That should give you an idea of the fuel you will use. As Mako said if your not sure you can always drop into Rotto. If you can work out an average fuel rate per km then multiply that by 160km that would be a safe estimate. Last trip out i think i did about 150km and that was fishing the 600s

Keen

Wed, 2008-01-23 20:49

I'd be keen to do that sort of stuff again, But I'd have to be a deckie cause my boats too small for that.

Skip can fish all day for all I care, and I'l put in all the usuals.

But will happely swap for those QUICK DIVE TRIPS or squid or late tailor sporting.
I'll only go out about 8-12 mile unless with other boats.
