Downriggers

Who has one and who uses them.

I know they are very popular for the freshwater guys but not as popluar on the salt.

I have one for my boat  a Canon, still to fit, but am looking at using it for some experimenting this year and especially in exmouth next year.

Any tips ideas etc?

Personally i think it could open up so many  new areas of fishing, and the possibilites endless.

I've fished with them back

Tue, 2009-10-13 18:55

I've fished with them back in QLD. They are invaluable when chasing spanish macks & cobia. Also proven very successful on a larger range of species.

Used in conjunction with your sounder & experience with your sounder, they will account for plenty of fish.

Rigging slimey macks or yakkas & towing them around the bait schools with the motor just in gear is the most effective technique.

What canon & what size bomb have you got?

yer we might as well try a few drops mid water i reckon YFtuna would be a good target send the lures down half way to the bottom .i think dhuies ,snapper ,blackass ,anything would grab a lure trolled passed at low speed..

Adam and I fished on a gameboat in Exmouth earlier this year and the skipper was telling me that he's had good success on marlin trolling normal marlin lures on downriggers. Just set the depth to what the bait are showing and away you go. I've never used one so can't comment but he spoke highly.

thats the plan, putting a few soft oscars etc down to where the bait is holding up, instead of raising them, i thought about going down to them.

Downriggers

I've experimented.  Rather than soft oscars you may want to consider a lure that can be trolled at slower speeds.  Pakula dojo peche?  There is a relationship between depth / speed, slower means deeper and deeper introduces another set of variables wrt to drag from the downrigger wire / braid but also from the main / fishing line.

You;d be suprised

Tue, 2009-10-13 20:34

If your in the right place you won't have a problem, the sharks are rather nomadic at times.  Last time I was fishing I had a livie out most of the day and didn't get sharked, didn't get much else either though.

Sure that will change tomorrow though :(

Bait

Tue, 2009-10-13 20:07

In Cairns many of the skippers use downriggers to catch their supply of trolling baits ie scad, scaleys and rainbow runners.

G'day Mako We have used them

Wed, 2009-10-14 11:32

G'day Mako

We have used them with great success for blacks in Exxy. We were using one of the "shark" downrigger weights on a cannon down rigger. Live tuna (3-4kg) threaded through the nose with a loop of dacron to a large circle hook. We would look for baitballs, throw some twisty's on a spinning outfit to the bait ball for the tuna, rig the tuna as quickly as possible, clip on to the downrigger clip and drop it 20-30m near the bait ball. Keeping the tuna as fresh as possible is very important. We were using fairly heavy gear to get the tuna to the boat as quickly and lively as possible. 30sec tops from the time it left the water until it was returned with a new piercing. Boat just in gear, reel in freespool with hand on the spool, wait untilyou see the bait getting aggitated, really aggitated and smile and take a couple of deep breaths. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination. yes you will get a shark or two but so what? You'll loose a circle hook. Much cheaper than a dojo or oscar. And the marlin are generally much more feisty attacking a livey and the ensuing brawl. Just remember bigger baits bigger fish and we all know you've got the arsenal. Maybe you do need that 130

Cheers Mick
