Demersal Reopening Spring 2027 - Inshore Snapper
Submitted by Ush on Tue, 2025-12-30 12:31
What are thoughts on the Fisheries commitment to reopen in Spring 2027 - it appears that a committment is indeed in place.
The question I have is related to the Snapper Spawning Closure (August-March). If they reopen the demersal fishery for Spring 2027, this would be well within the Snapper Closure and therefore lock out inshore snapper fishos until 2028.
I've posed the question to Recfish - a reopening of the fishery in 2027 should cater for all, including inshore snapper fisherman - who frequent the Sounds etc.
Cheers

Good spawning needed
I feel the spawning ground closures have been a good move and hope the current extended ban results in a couple of super good spawning seasons and the Sounds stay in good enough nick to foster those new juveniles. On that basis I reckon the spawning closures need to stay. Maybe some earlier demersal opening before 2027, say in the defined"Inshore " depths out to 20m, could give us access to pinkies but minimal impact on dhu?

agree on retaining the spawning closure - though if theyre forecasting an opening for 2027 - be great for it to be reopen earlier in the year ie April for the inshore snapper fisherman. Spring 2027 means no access in the closed area until 2028.

I will put $50 that when (if) reopening in 2027, the Abrolhos will be left closed to demersal fishing
