"the danger is in your mind" - unquote

Smile!

By Mail Foreign Service 3/11/09

The 14ft great white was snapped off the coast of Guadalupe island, Mexico, by scuba diver Amos Nachoum in August.

Daredevil Amos regularly swims with the monsters and even takes divers on expeditions to meet them.

The 59-year-old boasted: ‘I have a 100 per cent safety record.

'These sharks aren’t the ferocious creatures we see in Jaws.

‘The danger is in your mind.’

Nevertheless, the image is a little too close to the jaws of death for most people's comfort.

Fortunately sharks are believed to be short-sighted.

Scientists have claimed that attacks on humans are usually a case of mistaken identity.

Sharks have never come out of the ocean to hunt us, yet we go into their world to hunt them.
Even Brian Guest who was taken by a great white said before that he had no issues with sharks and his family respected that.
If your scared of sharks, stay out the water. Same as for bees in the flowers, snakes in the long grass, red-backs in the shed, go hide in North Bridge, you may find it safer Scotto!!!

I see the pectoral fins are pointed down in that last shot.  That means get out of my space in shark body language.

Feral,

Thats excellent advice, and I agree to a point, but man is still the top of the pile for killing, each other and every thing else, but I think that when you have a creature of that type in the area of man then they should be removed from the threat to man, after all,if someone walked around  with a weapon capable of maiming/killing people the law would do there best to stop them before a life was ruined or lost,so why not put the same attitude on other predators (sharks),if a dog bits a person,it is often put down,so if a shark bits a person, unprovoked attack, such as at Cottesloe and Safety Bay,to me you get ride of it, besides I enjoy diving and I am selfish enough to think that the lives of those I dive with and my own are more important that a shark.but some will think differently no doubt.jersey

does that mean cause every man has a penis, he is a potential rapist and should be castrated too??? ( or should we lock-up all viral men..??)
Same logic mate.
I grew up in an area with more GW per square kilomter than anywhere else in the world. False Bay South Africa. In fact Fish Hoek, my home town in that bay, is renowned for it's three resident GW that cruise the area.
Every weekend in Summer close to 400,000 ( yes thats right) people flock to the beaches of False Bay and maybe one attack happens a year. Yet every weekend, 20 or so get killed by cars on their way home.... ( yip they safer in the sea)

Thu, 2009-11-05 20:51

yeah i think a little differant to most ppl i suppose .... there are billions of ppl in this world and im not sure it can support us all ... there are a hell of a lot less sharks killing us than we are killing each other .. more ppl die in car crashes - is it then a good idea to stop every one driving just on the chance that they die ?? all im suggesting is a common sense approch.

Sharks have not succumbed to evolution in 40,000 years because they haven't needed to.  They are the ultimate hunting and killing machine for their survival.  We're in their space and that about sums it up for me.  Same with crocodiles.

As the superior race on this planet, we are the only inhabitants blessed with the ability to make choice.  If we get it wrong, our bad choice.  Take your chance by all means, but understand that is exactly what it is.

Live and let live.

While were at it lets kill

Fri, 2009-11-06 10:49

While were at it lets kill all the bees too.  After all they kill more poeple than sharks will ever kill.

The thought of being eaten by a shark has emotional conotations to us humans and many of us fear and go to great lengths to avoid the water as a result but I think its funny some/many of us have no problem with getting into a motor car and travelling at 100km/hr plus (which kills a hell of a lot more of us).

Sharks actually kill very few people, many claim they are killing machines but they are far from it.  Most attacks occured in water with low visibility or near sunrise sunset.  I also recall scuba diving under some surfers sitting on their boards waiting for the next set and looked up to note ther shilloette looks very similar to a seal which would account for a lot of attacks of surfers and swimmers.  Scuba divers often have encounters with great whites however not many are attacked (look less like a seal i guess).

Cheers

Nature and humans

Fri, 2009-11-06 12:24

When humans mix with wild animals there is bound to be attacks. I believe more people are killed by hippos in africa then cars! It's simple really, if you dont like sharks swim in a pool. If sharks are to be believed to be short sighted maybe that explains attacks? Maybe they arent 100% about what they are attacking.

CR@P mate, just in south

Fri, 2009-11-06 14:49

CR@P mate,

just in south africa alone, they kill 14,000 people per year on the roads, add in the rest of africa and you'd have over 200,000 deaths a year from vehicles... don't think that there is that many hippo's left in the wild. Christmas road death toll for south africa over the 30 days of the festive season is always around 1400 people ! out of a population of 48 million... I'd take my chances with the hippo mate, you never driven in africa before have you???

Yes hippo's kill the most people of all predators, but they not aggressive unless cornered, they just short sighted and when you between them and the water, you toast! simple..

1, you right you not one of my mates,
2, next time check your facts
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_people_are_killed_by_hippos_each_day
( 33 people per day average, hippo kills)= +/- 12,000 per year for all africa.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/thirty-people-killed-in-south-african-bus-accident-834817.html

thats not including the rest of africa.

http://www.grsproadsafety.org/knowledge-facts_and_figures_of_a_global_crisis-18.html

3, yeah you can call me anything you like..

ps the biggest killer in Africa is not the Hippo in fact, but indirectly the mosquito with malaria deaths being the second highest killer to cars! if you exclude AIDS! then again that makes the pen!s the most deadly by far...

Can I just put it on record

Mon, 2009-11-09 20:07

Can I just put it on record then that if I get killed by anything in the ocean I do not want it killed as some form of weird justice. I go there knowing I could be eaten, but I just don't think about it.

The chances of dying on SCUBA are far greater from my own cock up than another animal anyway. Saying that, the chances of dying on the way to the ramp are probably 200 times greater.

Beautiful creatures bit

Tue, 2009-11-10 15:42

Beautiful creatures bit dissapointed that some people feel they should "kill" or "remove them" Have to remember as others have said were going into THERE terroitory they have evolutionised to live in the water and will always have the upperhand. Also animals dont have the brain capabilities we do, to predators all we are is another food source. Back on topic. That guy has balls beileve me if i was in that situation im damn near sure id prove you could walk on water!
