Cottesloe Groyne rethink
After guaranteeing Jas04 that he would catch something decent if he popped down to Cottelsoe Groyne early in the morning, I thought I had better do some research and make sure my information was up-to-date.
So I decided to pop down there early this morning for two hours before going to work. It seemed like it should be ideal. High tide just after dawn, water stirred uo from the blow earlier this week. The only possible problem was a lack of wind.
Anyway, I arrived at about 5.45 am to find just one other angler - an old Cott Groyne regular judging by his set-up, which included a trolley for carrying his gear.
It was a beautiful morning, no wind (unfortunately) and a gentle swell.
I tossed out a paternoster rig with a mulie while I waited for the sun to rise, but not a touch.
Just after dawn, Matt (hlokk) arrived and he headed off to try his luck casting lures across the edge of the reef.
I persisted with my paternoster rig on my big rod and tossed out a twisty for awhile on my lighter gear.
Still no joy.
Finally I got a hit (you guessed it - a skippy - but it was pretty small and I still don’t knowhow it got its mouth around my 4/0 gangs).
After only receiving one follow from a herring on my twisty I decided to try my unweighted mulie rig.
That attracted a few more bites, unfotunately not from tailor.
I ended up with a herring and two skippy - the second one a reasomable size.
Matt ended up with a couple of herring.
While the fishing wasn’t overly exciting - it was an interesting morning.
Spoke to quite a few local fisherman, all of whom commented that the tailor had disappeared from the groyne for the past month.
I had a bit of a chat to one old regular and spoke to him about the gannets diving into the water a couple of hundred metres offshore. He said they have been a fairly regular sight lately and were diving on schools of scaly mackeral. He also said that occassionally big tuna could be seen chopping up the schools.
While you wouldn’t reach them with a cast, a balloon might make it if you had a decent easterly blowing.
Another interesting sight was a family of Ospreys which has made the area their home. A local said the young ones have developed a skill for begging herring off the fishermen on the groyne. And there were plenty of herring.
So Jas04, what should I tell you.
If you want to catch some skippy and herring, then the groyne would be okay. There were heaps of herring and there seemed to a few skippy around.
If you want to try for something bigger you might have to try there at night - or try the mole, or City Beach Groyne.
All the best, Colin Hay

Good report #1
A good report #1, shame there was no tailor around mate!
Good to see you are still sustaining your SKIP title LOL - I hear Osprey's favourite diet is skippy - maybe they heard you were heading down.

I tried the base of the groyne near the reef. The swell was reasonable, and was sucking over the reef before the white wash engulfed in. Behind the reef the water was churned up, then some clearer water behind it. It looked like perfect tailor habitat, but unfortunately nothing was interested. Tried some poppers and stickbaits but nothing. A 30g twisty pulled in two herring though.
Unfortunately lost the twisty on the reef when I looked down at my reel and saw the line cross over the spool. Put it back on, wind in line, tight, damn. Good reminder to leave it til the next cast when you have a sinking lure in reefy territory.
Saw one of the other guys there feeding one of the ospreys a fresh herring. (wasnt sure what birds they were at the time, except that they were bird of prey of some kind)

Yeah it was a great morning
It was worth crawling out of a warm bed at 4.45 am.
I will have to do it again soon and take my camera to get some pics of the Ospreys. They are fantastic.
One of the guys I was talking to said they live in a big tree near a property just south of Cott. He said the people who live in the house only realised they had a family of ospreys in the tree outside when they saw a bream falling past there front window. I guess one of the youngters must have dropped it meal.

cott groyne
Bodie, Tailor Marc and I went there last night for about 4 hours. There was nothing but port jacksons and big ROCK RATS everywhere (tailor Marc has some good rat / mulie pics). We had both big and small baits out but nothing seemed to interested no matter what we tried. It looked like prime Tailor conditions but not one glimpse of a Tailor at all :-(

Maybe you should have chucked the rat out on a hook
You might have caught a catfish.
I saw a couple when I first arrived. We need to bring the cats from Hillarys to Cott Groyne.
Marc, it is a pity you don't have a saltwater aquariurm, that PJ would have been perfect.
