long distance swim

well The dive last night wasn't cold but i was left with a huge swim as i surfaced on the wrong side of the river. I had two choices leg it up the hill and find someone with a phone and call the boys to drive around and get me or run the gauntlet back over to the other side on the surface with all my gear. Well i opted for the swim and what a swim it was the tide was running pretty fast on the other side. I was thinking bull shark bait with flashing lure lights all over me. I managed to get to the first moring line and hang of a moring to catch my breath before the last dash to the beach. I need to get a new compass. But did manage a feed of prawns

How wide was the river? Where you on tanks or free diving? How'd you manage that?

Just as well you weren't in the Mediterranean YellTongue out

I recon it would be getting

I recon it would be getting close to a kilometre. I was on tanks. it happened when I was leisurely gathering a few prawns minding my own business when something stirred the bottom up and I became disorientated and my compass decided to trip out.

Haha, you'll only ever do

Wed, 2008-06-11 12:37

Haha, you'll only ever do that once Bill.

Did it about 10 years ago - went and bought a compass that week.  Not a nice swim back across the river in that situation.  Mine was in summer too, so lots more boat traffic!

Cheers Pete

Bloody hell

that's a bit of an experience Bill. It is hard work swimming with tanks against the tide. Hope the prawns tasted good.

sucks!

Good to see you got a feed Bill. I ended up at the Pt Walter "rise" when i first started diving the Swan at night and then bought a compass. The long surface swim suck's,especially for an unfit bugger like me!

Wed, 2008-06-11 14:53

hehehe...yeh that is very true Bill and i'm keen as all my gear is ready to go now and i'll be a sh!t load warmer. I haven't been out chasin prawns or crays for a while and spewin. The hold up lately is that i'm off to Exmouth next week and i've been getting my other boat all sorted (fair bit of work/refitting) and that will stay up there!

I'll get out for prawns when i get back for sure!

Removing someone else's reg

Wed, 2008-06-11 19:39

Removing someone else's reg is quite funny. When that gets old, the next trick is to turn their air off. That one's good for a laugh as well...

Got disorientated a few years back while diving at Mosman...ended up in the middle of the river, right next to the Water Police boat. I think they'd been following my lights for a while, and waiting for me to come up. They were nice enough to tow me back in!
