1 cup self raising flour, 1 egg, slowly add 1 cold beer.  Put in fridge for 30 mins.

Dip fillets in milk, then regular flour, dip in batter, deep fry in vegetable oil till golden in colour.

I always do some pineapple and banana fritters too.

Coral Patch

Fri, 2013-06-21 06:12

The best fish and chip shop I've come across worth recommending is the Coral Patch down on the foreshore in Augusta.

Note--------DO NOT park your car in the two bays right next to the littles outside eating area, one chip on the ground and it will be a roosting spot for 50 full of shirt seagulls ready to change the colour of it to Collingwood colours

sadly the quality has dropped right off due to new owners but the fish and chips out at Point Samson was always worth it, so much variety. loved their reef and reef meal. nice big fillet of grilled fish, topped with prawns and squid with a cheesy garlic sauce with chips and salad plus the worlds biggest oysters you almost needed a knife to cut them up. Couldn't go past their Squid fish and chips otherwise, beautiful crispy batter and lovely chips with some vinegar, pure bliss

we eat there once a week and they are great! serve of crumbed squid is supposed to be 10 ring but on average we get around 20 and they always chuck more of everything else in except the fish. no complaints from my house and we never feel like we have had a grease overload.
EDIT - now located at Muriel st innaloo

Fri, 2013-06-21 10:19

If you want to have the " old school" fish & chips you must try Bassendean seafood or as i call them Cumberland fish supply down in Bassendean.

I first went in there when i was around 6 yrs old and its the same owners ( father just passed away R.I.P) but the mums there with younger help.

They taste the same as back in the day and the real classic fish & chip smell.

My girlfreind Lisa is from the U.K and she said its the only fish & chip place that has the old UK fish and chip taste. Well the fish here is better but chips are the same. Cant beat these splashed all over with brown malt vinegar!!!! They also have fresh lemons in a box to take as you leave :")

Highly recomend them!!!

38 Cumberland Way

Bassendean 9279 5731,

Love grabbing fish & chips then taking them down to Point reserve ( river) just down the road . Fish & chips by the river at sunset

I'm Hungry.

Petermac, best one down your way that I have found is the fish & chip shop on the north side of railway terrace that's opposite subways. They hand cut their chips, and cook them twice, gives a unique flavour/texture. The fish is tasty and good value, perhaps just a bit oily for my liking. Service is crap, but seems that is normal across teh board now. The one across the road from there is pretty average. Best you will eat is the ones you catch yourself, technique is not so important when they are spanking fresh!

Marc, I'm with you on point reserve, great spot for a picnic, but haven't tried the F&C shop, I normally grab a Guildford bakery pie :) I'll have to try them

Cheers.

Fri, 2013-06-21 14:11

I studied in Leederville for 3 years and discovered sweetlips on Oxford street. The fish n chips there is real impressive. You can choose through a glass window your choice of fish (Snapper, bluebone, flathead etc). Even got a write up in the papers a few years back it is that good...Just reminded me its fish n chip friday for all us FIFO workers!! Beers, footy and fish n chips after work today!! Little rippa!!

About 10 years ago, I camped at Kalbarri. We used to go to a Fish & Chip shop there that the owners brother (in law?) used to go out and catch the fish they cooked. So they didn't have a menu up until the fishing boat came in. That was straight from the boat to the deep fryer.

Lures fish and chips on canning highway, brilliant always nice and fresh and never drowning in oil. Nothin worse than picking up your fish and the batter stays on the paper. Thumbs up for lures and because of the layout you can see all the cooking being done not even 6 feet away give it a go it won't disappoint.

Crazzels here in Leeman

Its next to the Roadhouse on Indian Ocean Drive, best snapper/chips ever..............PS she also makes the best ever home made sausage rolls, nearly as good as mine hahahah

Hoki fillets and chips at the Blue Shed also very good at Woodie Point.  Often we'd go order about $10 worth of her chips and eat them at the CPBA with a few drinks, she makes a beautiful crunchy chip.

Just come back from Townsville, son took us for a drive to Ingham and had the best Barramundi and Chips (were excellent, nice and crunchy) at the shop facing the beginning of the long sugar wharf, as I call it, very, very nice also.

Haven't been to Dominics on Hampton Rd opposite Moondye Joes, but his chips are to die for as he peels (Ruby Lou potatoes), cooks his own chips, his food not bad either good old Italian meals but haven'l been there for a couple of years.

Best used to be the Coral Trout in Hedland next to Sealanes, unfortunately the old bloke who ran it died quite a while ago now and it subsequently shut down to make way for development. Was eating there since i can remember until we left when I was 14. Yet to find a decent F&C shop up around my way  in Butler!!

We supplied them with fish for about the last 3 years before she sold up.
Wouldn't have been the last time that we got them to come down and pick out which fish they wanted---on condition that they must take the one they hooked out. Live reds, cobia, spanglies etc swimming around in the brine tank with the deck hose to keep then going

If you have a fussy misses like mine, that doesnt want deep fried...

light paste of olive oil over the fillet, crack some salt n pepper over then the magic ingredient.....

sprinkle with good 'ol all purpose seasoning (purple label) and whack fillets under the grill for a couple of minutes!!

Makes even dart and small trevally fillets taste like the nicest reef fish!!!
