Are snelled hooks legal under new rules?

Im presuming they are as long as just one bait. We like to use one whole squid with two hooks snelled with about a  20mm gap between them. Does anybody know for sure if thats legal under new rules? thanks for any info

Seems to be ok looking at it but the better question would be whether it is ok to use an Ockta Jig as a sinker

snelled hooks

What i read was that you are restricted to ONE bait. using mullies i have two hooks, the upper one snelled but is only one bait. Not sure how that will swing, don't remember any mention of hooks just bait.

Why limit it to one bait

Thu, 2022-12-15 10:45

Why limit it to one bait anyway? I can't see what it aims to achieve.

My understanding was that up

Thu, 2022-12-15 11:02

My understanding was that up untill the new rules, we have been allowed a maximum of 3 hooks per line. eg: 3 sets of gangs or 3 sets of snells are classed as 3 hooks. Will be pretty crap if they determine a 2 hook snell as 2 hooks because the hooks are separated by line/leader and not connected by the hook eye as gangs are.

Fairly sure there was a rule giving the maximum hooks per hook also eg: no more than 5 hooks ganged (not certain on this)

Bait rigs like the Mustad Bait Catcher rig that containe 6 hooks I believe are illegal here in WA. Need to cut them in half to comply with three hook rule.

Will be painful using a bait catcher rig with only 1 hook!!!!!

 It is only for demersal

It is only for demersal fishing. And by the way if you buy the mustard bait catcher rigs they have 2 rigs in each pack with three hooks no need to cut them down.

It is one set of hooks ie a single hook or three snelled together all on the one leader is OK. Just no more paternoster rigs with multiple leaders.

No need to worry for now it won't change until the 1st February if they can get the required legislation written and approved between now and then. I suspect they will use a Section 43 order under the ministers authority to make the new rules that way they avoid parliament rather than change the act.

I remember talking to a fisheries officer at the ramp a few years back with pending changes and he told me the same thing. Until legislation is passed they can't book you for what pending changes are in the pipeline even if dates have been announced. They need to make that clear.

And that’s the damned issue.

Thu, 2022-12-15 13:56

I will continue to target gummies in my favourite area post February 1 .   I used gummy slider rigs from Rigmaster with either whole herring or skippy cutlet.   Inside FFB ......can they argue despite a long history that I am targeting one of the banned species.  Legislation should be CLEAR and not subject to individual interpretation and that comes from someone with 44 years of experience reading small print .......

Dont bother trying to get an answer here.

I CAN tell you that if anyone here says they know the answer to these and the other new rule questions being asked, it hasnt come from RFW.
Ring Fisheries and ask them, because noone knows outside of them.
