Ship Yards
I see your from secret harbour. Why dont you try the boat yards in henderson. Austal ships, Oceanfast, Image theres heaps more. Did my apprenticeship at Austals as a Ali Fabricator, great company to work for and they hire up to 200 new apprentices every year for various positions. Give that a crack, but like snappermiles said u might have to wait till mid year or even to end of year to apply

you should make up a
you should make up a good resume and cover letter to give employers an idea about yourself. it will make them take notice of you instead of the other couple of hundred applicants they will get.
and maybe use spell check a few times and definately get someone to proof read it.

I just proof read your post LOL
Ooopsss ....
Resumes are great if you have had a good employment history. Not so good (or require more thought) for the young fellas. Get some industry training advice mate. We have a serious skill shortage in Australia so heaps of opportunities for young blokes to focus on something and make a good career out of it. We have all been in your situation mate. Some of us make bad decisions and some of us just can't cut the mustard due to lack of effort. Go for it!

bad decisions
i was one of these guys who made a bad decision!! spending my younger times partying and took a cruisey job hiring jet skis on the beach! it was a great job and i was earning alot better money than my mates doing apprenticships at the time but 4 years later they were on the big money and i was still on my little wage that sounded good till they got there quals! luckily i got my shit together later in life and got a good mining job but it was hard work! so my advice get your head together do anything you can to get an apprenticeship and stick with it!! once your qualified the world is your oyster and you can spend more time fishing and partying! good luck

thats top advice Snap, and
thats top advice Snap, and exactly as i would have written it, except with the following addition
"I need a job atm" is what PDU has written. Number one with an apprenticeship, and I reckon any tradie will say also-an apprenticeship isnt "a job" as such. Sure you get paid, and do work but if you just look at it that way you 95% likely will not finish it.
You WILL get all the shit jobs, cleaning, running for tools, called nasty names etc.
I remember reading a story in the paper about 7 years back when the "skills shortage" was first becoming big news.
A woman on page 3 of the West had said "My son had an apprenticeship as a Cabinet Maker and after 3 months he still hadnt done any cabinet making so I pulled him out of it. All he did was sweep the floor and get smoko".
Im sure I wouldnt be the only tradesman who would be amazed to read that.
Apprentices get paid alot more relatively than 30 years back, then it was no where near enough to live independantly and there simply was no option to change employers or quit if you didnt like it. You copped real nasty shit that simply wouldnt fly these days but at the end you were proud to be "on the other side" at the end.
You need to look at it as "school but in the real world, with big boys rules". The fact you get paid is not relative to what you need to put in.
Advice-RESEARCH, and decide what you want to do or are interested in beforehand and focus on that. Cos most employers will see past an application for "a job as an apprentice"
To those (there are some on FW) who will say "thats so negative, give him encouragement", this IS encouragement. Anyone who starts an apprenticeship thinking "what am I going to get out of this tomorrow (rather than in 4 years) is probably destined to be disappointed.
BEST OF LUCK Pom, set a target and aim at it. It will be the best and most useful move you'll make in your life if you pull it off!

Glad to see Snap jump in and claim mileage
For exactly what I posted basically.
Today there are rules as to how people behave in the workplace. Training institutions will provide that information. Mistreating an apprentice is somewhat similar to rape and the ramifications can be harsh. So what if you have to sweep the floors for a while? That's the employer's responsibility and at the end of the day he will answer to the funding bodies if the would-be apprentice walks away. Look at the motor vehicle industry. The Federal Gov't has spent heaps setting up training schools acroos the nation and the MVT industry has chipped in. There are safe places to gain a skill and accreditation. You don't have to be big and strong to be successful. There are rules for bullying mate.

I even take mine fishing!!
Wow Snap and Rob, Ya both bang on.. Ive been chasing an apprentice for the last few years, and its soooo hard to get good workers, that actually want to hang around for the long haul... even when I dont expect them to do anything I wouldnt!!
Im a carpet layer of 22yrs and with no need for a ticket(although I got mine) I can train guys up in as fast as 6 months... they WILL earn a fortune(but THEY need to put in some massive effort)... the last guy I trained up wouldve been about 5 yrs ago, and his prior was about 8 mnths earlier.... after that(and b4 those 2) Ive lost count of how many seem enthusiastic at the start, but after a few weeks stop showing up(obviously mummy wanted her treasure to knock down a room for her but he couldnt do it yet!!) I ended up stopping laying for a coupla years cause I got so sick to death of doing shit on my own cause some little snot couldnt be bothered showing up anymore, or answering his phone or front door, on a day that Id have a house full of furniture!!
Pom Im chasing someone currently. You live a long way from me, as Im in Thornlie... but Im always happy to give anyone a go, the distance thing could be an issue though(it tends to be)... its heavy physical work.. but its indoors!!
I do sound a little negative but its mainly cause Im one of those people that believes knowledge is useless unless you can share it... but ya just cant when people dont show!!
Im also very open to employing mature age apps too, it costs a little more but reliability becomes a little better...
I could go on all night about this subject... but Ill save yas all from the whining!!!

I hope your "art" doesnt get painted/scribbled onto the sides of peoples property! ie, machinery, buildings fences etc. Ends up costing alot of innocent people big money to get it removed!
Maybe an apprentiship in the army will pull your head in!!
Back to the topic, definently go for the sparky apprentiship. You can earn big money if your good and make the right connections and its not a terrible dirty trade either. Im a plumber and get sick of coming home filthy dirty most days!

yeah thats right, you might
yeah thats right, you might reckon its art and some others also, but if you dont own the eazel your painting it on and dont have permission then its graffiti and vandalism.
Being on this sforum I imagine you dream of earning some coin and getting your own kickass boat.
What'll you reckon when some snotnosed kid puts his "art" on your $100K boat? If your an employer by then I doubt youd view him as good material to commit to employing for 4 years on an apprenticeship contract?
Someone else here said as your 17 a juvenile record means nothing. Dead right-but you have no leeway now to change your ways. Now or never!

(nothing like a good clip around the ears) May be a apprenticeship in paint removal will make him appreciate the damage he and his mate's have done. Some of us do growup eventually

So you think graffiti art looks cool huh ?
I reckon missing teeth, gaping cuts, black eyes & internal bleeding looks cool on graffiti vandals too, not just childish little slaps on the wrist .....
........... but unfortunately it's ILLEGAL, so I don't do it.
Then again, if I didn't get caught .........
Get my drift ?
Good luck getting yourself back on line mate, but it's up to #1 (you) to do it - and with a shit education, grammar & life skills you're going to have a hard time.
All the time you've wasted already means you've got to work twice as hard to get it back.
BUT, if you get through it all and contribute to society - at least you can stand proud to say you got your shit together,
unlike many who just end up on a downward spiral to nowhere ........ fast.

I won't repeat what the
I won't repeat what the previous guys have said, ther're all pretty much on the money.
Do ya research and do some leg work, go knocking on office doors you might get a start as a TA and work ya way into a apprenticeship. Tafe might not be the go for you by the sound of your attitude to schooling alot of people use tafe as a free load and might lead you more astray.
You could possibily look into the construction industry. get a forklift ticket, EWP licence and working at heights, companies like Mono's, CB&I and United are just a few to try. The Gorgon Project is getting bigger each month.
Or try labour hire alot of these mobs could get you a start and or some variation of work.
As said before pull ya head in nose to the grind stone and ya won't look back. Just remember play time is good but it gets better with a pocket full of cash.

once you turn 18 a juvenile record means nothing. Its a clean slate.
Try http://www.cciwa.com/Apprenticeships_WA/about
Resume probably means not much at all.
I suggest doing a pre-apprenticeship, do lots of work experience with various contractors and businesses revolving around the trade you choose. The main thing is to prove to the recruiter that you really want to do the trade for the right reasons and that you will stick it out. Seen so many losers drop out and who's heads were never in it to begin with and think of all the hundreds of kids who missed out because of them.

My eldest boy Tony (RIP) got a apprenticeship as a fitter and turner many years ago. Even as a baby I knew he would grow up working with his hands.
He only had one interview and got the apprenticeship out of 40 applications.
1. He rode his dirt bike all the way along the railway line from Cranbourne to the industrial area of Dandanong, Victoria, (much to my disgust when I found out when I got home from work)
2. The future boss asked all of them to make something out of what they were give, Tony succeeded above all the best school marks, best resumes, clothes he didn;t have a suit at 17yrs old but others turned up with them on etc, Why, because he did it with his hands and made a piece of metal into a working piece what ever the boss wanted at the interview.
3. His future boss was looking for innitive, work on your own, honestly, in a lad of 16yrs not high maths, or school work. The boss loved the idea that Tony rode his dirt bike to the interview and could fix it if it broke down. He got the job and stayed there for 3yrs, until the boss sold his business and went back to UK, his boss was a Boeing Engineer, so Tony got excellent training and also blacksmithing which helped him so much, the apprentice board got him another apprenticeship to finish out his time and he pasted. Apparently he has metal work in the Musuem in Canberra for that years turn out for fitter and turners he would have been apprentice of the year in Practical and Therey if his maths had been a bit better.. He finished his apprenticeship and also did the eletricial side as well. When he was alive he earned $40hr a hr and working in the metro area of Perth often getting sent to the Philipes to work from his firm I'm going back about 10yrs.
If you are really set on doing something with your life, do it no moaning or groaning just get out there and do it. Nothing comes to you sitting on your ass, you have to do the hard yards in life to get anywhere. Good luck young fella.

We have 2 EGT apprentices
We have 2 EGT apprentices with us on a construction site in Perth and they are both 2nd year apprentices. They are clearing over $800 week for 8 hour days - mon to fri. If you can get in with the bigger mobs that pay the bigger $ you can earn really good money working in Perth. You can obviously get better money in mining but you will be working longer hours to get it.
EGT can be a good option because you get to experience different companies and different aspects of electrical work. Only problem is you might be earning $400 a week working with a housing mob while your EGT mate is earning $800 week on a big construction site.
Like others have said though, it won't fall in your lap. If you want it - go and get it. Pull your head in, stop the graffitti shit and show a bit of initiative. Showing a bit of enthusiasm for the job is one of the biggest assets an apprentice can have. You could be as dumb as a post but if you work hard, show up on time, have the right attitude and have a go without whinging then you're half way there.
Good Luck!

hope it goes well
but I have to add that when I was employing crew fishing, and someones mum/dad came past and asked for a job for their kid-the answer would always be the same.
"where is he and why isnt he here asking?"
Your dad sounds like a really good bloke-but maybe he needs a bigger pair of steelcaps to move you along?
Shave your bum fluff off, dress neatly and speak only when you need to.
DONT repeat that shit you wrote above about "art, childish scribbles" etc.
It brings to life that old saying;
"tis better to keep quiet and be thought a fool, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt"
Best of luck with it and let us know how it goes. But personally Id be disappointed if you got an apprenticeship first go, with Dad doing all the legwork.
Itd likely mean jackshit to you, and bypass someone who has been running round doing it tough.

TA work
i would recomend you start out by doing some TA work with various trades to make sure the trade you start with is something as a young person is going to stay with , STOP thinking about the dollars, all trades will pay the big dollars if you get the right break and are good at the job , dont get the easy impression that the first company is going to pay you the $ 100k a year and a free car etc , you could get your school to set you up with trade work during the holidays as a trial , when you know the trade you want and are going to commit to,apply to companys or look at a pre app at tafe which will give you a big leg in the any company looking for apprentices, tafe starts most months of the year . unfortunatley i have seen to many young guys say they want to be a sparky , carpenter , plumber and so on because thats was the first offer that came their way spend some time on your decision, good luck

All good advice there from everyone definatly get into some sort of trade mate , you will have to put up with shit money for 4 years but trust me its all worth it in the end , i left school and started an apprenticship at 15 was qualified tradesman by 19 , im now 20 working fifo and earning over 150k. Start researching different trades and find a couple that you think you might be interested in , then start calling up companies for some work experience , if you show your keen enough they may even take you on. Or if you find a trade that your serious about getting into then go and do a pre apprenticeship at tafe , which will double your chances of getting an apprenticeship
and will show that your not just doing it for a job but you actually want to learn. Good luck !
