was pulling in some whopper

was pulling in some whopper herring today off the end of the wall... was packed out with heaps of people so couldnt get our spot on the corner to cast for tailor....

But yeah, pulled in the wierdest fish on the bubblegum pink 3" snapback....

It was about 35cm long... the fatter but same build as a good sized herring... it had skin like a skippy, so was really slimy and slippery, as if he had no scales..... head like a KG with big eyes like a herring and the colour of a greenback... no dots and had like longer pectorals than a herring and a big sorta frilly long lateral fin down the back half of its back.... like a skippy and a tail like a skippy...

was wierd! Had a yellowy tinge on the underbottom too.......

nah i know what a butter fish is.

The easiest way to give you a visual of what it looks like is a

think of a BIG HERRING with a KG snout.

When I first pulled it out, it looked like a herring but it was the skin that gave it away... the skin had the greeny slimy slippery look/feel.

actually i think it was this:

http://www.fish.gov.au/fishnames/fishnames.php?pid=4358

otherwise called a snotty or snottynose....

the picture doesnt do it too much justice but you know the pectoral and anal fins on a trevally? well it had the exact same fins as that, aswell as the very smooth silvery slippery skin of a trevally....

Thats a fairly thin version and maybe I was just google eyeing the head thinking it was longer than it actually is....

The only other distinguishable feature about this fish was that although it was very slippery, on the skin on top of the tailbone/backbone, only the length of the tail flesh itself, was very very rough, a stark contrast between the smooth slippery texture of the rest of the body and the rough thin patch up its backbone... hmm wierd?

Im almost positive its some sort of trevally, although it wasnt as wide as one in it's height... the fins and skin and its tail shape give it away.

I went down last thurs i think and got into some great sized skippy from the north wall near the disabled platform. They just couldnt resist 70mm squidgie flick baits in the green meanie colour. Twiched right along the bottom they smashed it every time. All were just under the 1kg mark, around 900gms for a guess. Great fun on 2kg gear!

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Interesting Spess... Ive never really fished near the disabled platform before..... Maybe I should try near there sometime.... Maybe thats where they hang most of the day... because every evening, same time, they are always at the little groyne... and before that, they make thier way from outside somewhere, straight past the end in a HUGE school, taking anything which you throw at them, they are on the bite for 4 minutes then gone... obviously moved on... but always at the same time in the evening...

What time were you at that spot?

Late afternoon around the 4ish mark onwards i think. Which small groune are you talking about? The one where the whale washed up on? inside the marina or outside? However i can usaly get into them all along the north rockwall if you work the bottom slowly and fish the sand patches near weed. Bit of berley gets them there and the hardest thing like you said is that they piss off quick so keep laying that berley out so they want to stay!

The thing that surprises me with skippy around hillaries on soft plastics is finding the right colour to get them to strike! Ive found the best technque to work the plastic but every time i go there i go through 4 or 5 colours and sometimes shapes to get them to bite it. Blue pilly works one day, then green meanie the next and before that they would touch anything that wasnt bright pink! Got me stuffed, just means you have to take a real good selction with you which is not nesessarly a bad thing i suppose. Just means the cargo pants are a bit heavy! :)

Give us call sometime and well head down for some together. I love this type of fishing its really relaxing. Show you some good spots to where most people walk over ;)

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

ah shit, i thought you were talking about mindarie "disabled platform"

yeah no worries, I was talking to tyson today about picking up our berley too lol

Yeah, i was talking about mindarie but I agree with ya on the whole selective thing...

Ive caught on plain white unscented plastic tailed grubs on one day to nuclear chicken 3" gulp minnows the next, somedays white works just as well and some days, the baby shrimps work... other days ive got hits on the pink snapbacks 3" so yeah its all over the place but the same spot at mindarie.

I use a deluxe belt bag which holds all my plastics, my leaders, measuring stuff, camera, berley, even a beer sometimes, pliers and snips etc etc all the goods...... and I use a low profile comfy rapala tackle sling which has a variety of metals, poppers and hooks and sinkers and jigheads on my back so its never hard for me to walk spots and flick placcies around now :D  So my cargo pants are never heavy :P
