Another Engine Hour Query

How does an engine hour gauge work? I have a Johnson 140 4 stoke and it sems to tick over every so many minutes like a time clock, does this take into consideration speed, revs, conditions etc?

Should be just hours on the motor. Your Johnson (Suzuki) computer will be storing all revs, alarms etc.

Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Got the same engine m8 2006 model, Clock keeps ticking while the motor is Running so dosnt matter if flat out or at idle. Just had service done last week @ 235 was at 45 hours when i bought the boat last easter.

Better to use a sea anchor than try to idle over a lump all day,  reduce the hours & service charges.

Have been told treat it nice should get between 7 - 10,000 hours easy.

It is just a basic timer that will tick over once the ignition is on, even if the engine is not running. So if drifting & engine is off but for some reason you need the ignition on to run electronics like i have seen on some 2nd hand boats, the hour meter will keep ticking over & you will need to re wire those electrics to your Battery.

The clock should only be connected to the motor run output so as to indicate the run time of the motor, some guys have wired it through the accessories and if the key is not fully off , but motor is not running the hour meter will tick over, hour meters are indicstion only to give an idea when the service is due and no difference to in servicing wether motor has idled for the past 50 hrs or run full revs , onlt the onboard computer can print out that info
