Where are they biting at the moment

Garden island restrictions

Just heard about some guys squiding 200m off the north eastern bay of garden island (where all the boats anchor for the day) and had the navy security move them on at least 500m off the shore because there is now a exclusion zone all around the island due to the raised terrorist threat. Thought he was bullshiting ! Anyone heard about this ?

Another Trophey Bites the Dust PB trout!

 All

went into the mountains and had a hot session on the trout.... went to my favourite system to fish once again, which consistently has tropheys. For the first time fishing this system i had blue sky! i was stoked!

Generally we average 6-7 strikes here a day, but we got 13! unforuntly alot of these hook ups didnt stick.

Fish were large once again, and it was good to see the rainbows starting to work back up the system from spawning

A few 8-9.5 pounders were caught plus my PB rainbow at just a tad over 12 pound.

Some of the fish that were dropped we possible tropheys as well.

Who saids there is no tropheys on the north island? thats two in two sessions and they will only get bigger as the summer goes on!

All fish were released

Safety Bay bustin' up....

JohnF's CHOONAH post and his talk of bird action inspired me to post this bit of footage from Friday night just off Waikiki beach.

Couldn't resist mosing over to see what all the fuss was about but whatever it was that was chomping into them wasn't small so this was about as close as I was getting.

Don't blink but or you'll miss it. Only got a short bit of usable stuff as conditions were pretty sloppy.

About 45 secs. of vid.

Whiting

Stoked to finally get out for a fish and luckily picked up a good bag of whiting. Due to the wind being up early, we headed out from Hillarys around 9:30. Got out to the spot and there were a couple of boats anchored on spots I'd caught at before. Decided to drift with the sea anchor and had just enough weight to hold bottom. The boys picked up a couple of double headers and after marking a new spot, anchored up and reaped the rewards. Ended up with about 30 sand whiting with some thumpers in amongst the catch, a few yellow tail for bait next time and even a couple of beautiful, just sized pinkies on the whiting circle hooks.  They went back to swim another day.  The water glassed off beautifully as we headed back in around 12 and spent a little time looking at ground for the pots. Hopefully putting them out in the next couple of weeks. My boys love whiting so it was great to get a few meals in the freezer and a great family outing.

CHOONAH - Bit better photos

Tuna everywhere in metro waters today. 5 minutes from the boat ramp was the first school, threw a few poppers at em but a bit too quick for us.

Pretty rough conditions this morning, which limited things, but me and Langa found some and less than 60 seconds of getting the lures in the water, double header....this was followed by two triples and another double. We dropped 2 and landed 6 (bag limit in quick time). Only took a photo of the last one landed, as we had the go pro going, but it ran out of batteries.....hmmm.

Had a quick sambo jig, landed a few, this one gave my Trinidad 16a a good workout.

On the way home, saw some free jumpers (one went 6 ft clear of the water!), these were much better size fish but we had our bag limit.

Filleted the fish today, lots of sashimi, a nice trade made for some crays.

Tuna appeared very widespread.

Some nice Reds

I got another chance to go fishing with my brother and sister in law last night. It was on the wrong side of the moon after the closed season had finished so we didn't have high expectations. Things started slowly too until we found a patch of Nannygai and after that they started coming over the side with good regularity.

Some highlights were the double hook up I got with one fish coming on an Undertaker jig head with Macarthy soft plastic. It was a good fish too so was pretty stoked. Pity the other one was a Slatey bream.

The best bit though had to be the finish. On our way home Mick drifted 4 Wonky holes and we got 5 quality Large Mouth Nannygai (Saddle tail snapper) to over 9 kilos. The drifts involved no more than two per spot and on one Mick was simply happy with the one fish on the first drop. All 5 fish hit within seconds of touchdown making this particular session all of about 15 minutes.

To top it off he decided to check out a favourite headland spot on the way home and see if there was any Fingermark (Golden snapper) about. Within 2 minutes a big Live squid came to the light and was netted and sent back down on my line. Within another 2 minutes I was hooked up. Fingermark number 1 was followed in a similar fashion by Fingermark number 2 a couple of minutes later. Then came number three and number 4 to make it 9 solid fish in the space of about 30 minutes. The biggest Fingermark was 80 cm.

It was an awesome trip for an inshore one and we lost count of the fish tally with a few more in a crate next to the ones shown. We had to keep running away from the Small Mouth nannygai (Crimson snapper) to find the Saddles. It was over 30 fish with the rest thrown in.

Once again my custom Phenix Titan was absolutley brilliant and I'm loving this rod big time. Matched with a Stella 5000 and 50lb braid it is a weapon.

Monster Bull Dorado!

One of the biggest Mahi I've seen out here, check out the size on this thing!  Fishing has been pretty good lately, best day this week was 11 dorado and a nice marlin, slowest day was 3 sails and a pair of dorado. Fishing is really start to pick up down here!

Sorry for the bad colors, my Nikon battery died and these came off a cheap cell phone!

Bussleton Fishing?

Hey guy,

I am spending the weekend with the misses and the kid down in busso, I have never gone fishing in busso, my bro told me there is some cracking squid off the jetty at night, but what is beach fishing like? If anyone could give me some tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Any fish on the Gemini?

Thinking of doing some jigging for sambos on the Gemini on saturday has anybody caught any there recently or has anybody heard they are there.

micro jigging, good tailor and large squid

Hey guys i have recently come back from a 4 month trip from europe and now back in perth. I have been on the site religiously watching and reading everyones posts every second day i have been over there.

Having sold my tinny before i left i had arranged with my mate that the day after i landed this friday just gone that i wanted to be out on the water as soon as possible.

With the Dermesal ban on we set out yesterday afternoon for squid, tailor and flathead.

Ofcourse the forecast was wrong and was pretty blowy out there.

Fishing was hard work and to windy to drift for squid so anchored the first spot and only caught wrasse and a batfish then went to the 2nd spot and burly up consistently still only managed on flathead before dark. Was good though because we could see it through the glass panel but the blowies we get to the bait before the flatty could have a chance to get near it so i put on a 3 gram jig i bought in barcelona and on the first lift hooked a nice little bluespot that would have gone just over 40cm. After that only managed one herring then everything went very quiet.

I was very confident that after dark was going to produce but my mate was pretty keen to tuck into shelter.

Luckily i was right.

Biggest tailor was 54cm and weighed 1.5kg.

Biggest squid went easily over 1kg and havent measured the tube yet but its the 3rd biggest i have ever caught going by weight.

Heading up to Wedge this coming weekend.

Hey guys this is my first post, heading up to Wedge next weekend and I've never been before, any tips on what to target?  Heard Dhufish and Tailor are around?

whales!

Went over to rotto yesterday (friday) just to get familiar with the route and spots around. Followed the first ferry, fairly brisk early easterly and a bit overcast. Didnt look all that promising but then the day just got better.

Sun came out wind dropped off and to our great delight we stumbled into a large spreadout group of whales breaching and frolicking in the morning sunshine.

What a treat! Sadly our photo skills are pretty ordinary and we kept missing the whale and just got the splashes. Our kids would blame the operators and theyd be right.

Anyway do yourselves a favour and have a bopeep but just remember to be careful and give them room.

50mtrs is close enough to see and when they breach you don't wanna be close.

Respect  them guys, they are wonderful animals.

If you have little kids take them to have a look. Its way better than telly.

Its my first time to see a whale in the wild and I wish id done it years ago.

All you can Eat Smorgasbord Tonight..

Went out and pulled the pots for 14 keepers, from there it was a quick rip around the spots..

First to the Whiting patch where we got 13 before they went quite..

Second to the Squid Patch, we got 3 Crackers with the biggest tube was 29cm after cleaning.

Then off to catch a few Herring for Lunch and a couple for Beach fishing tonight.. 10 Herring in Total..

Crays

Is anyone geting crays in pots yet

is it worth setting mine yet or do I wait a wile

cheers

first week of crays

Got out for a couple of dives during the first week.  No whites (of either variety) seen.

Heaps of kakkas and hairy females around too. Shouldn't be too far away til they run.

Metro marlin report?

Anyone know the story behind a supposed metro blue marlin in last week? Water temps are getting +21.5'C so it is possible.

cheers

Safety Bay Squid - video

Well despite the predictions of weather armageddon for yesterday morning (although some people around Perth copped it) I still managed to get out and get some ink on the 'new' yak.

Paddling into a gusty South Easterly gave me a good workout while setting up for drifts but the chop, cloud cover and relatively clear water made for good sqidding conditions.

Ended up with 6 for about an hour and twenty minutes work.

Interesting that they all came from around the same 100 metre or so area.

Gonna take a second rigged rod out next time to see if I can pick up the followers.

Just loving the Ocean Prowler Elite 4.5

Video only runs for a minute. Best in HD...

Cray Pot ethics

Hi All,

It is alarming that only 3 days into the season and already 1 pot stolen. It is really concerning people refer to pots as shopping trollys ( be it a joke or not) and actually do not own a single pot themselves.

I don't have the answer, how we as a group can stop this behaviour, but appeal to everyone to respect both Comercials and recreation pots. Respect is mutual, for Comercials this is their source of income, for recreational it's hard enough trying to find a gap between work and weather to get a feed. I trust the authorities will enforce the full punishment for culprits that get caught, because I know if I catch anyone on mine or my friends pots they will delt with accordingly.

LETS MAKE A STAND TOGETHER!

Offshore Angling Club - October Field Day Report

The Offshore Angling Club held it's October field day on the 11th and 12th of October.

Some good fish were landed, most notably a Samson Fish and Small Shark both released.

Condtions were pretty favourable for the most part, which made a nice change.
They were tricky into Saturday evening but Sunday morning was magic.

Report and some photos http://beachfishingwa.org.au/field-day-reports/october-field-day-2014/

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Land Locked Fun

Had some fun on this morning on the banks of Wilson Inlet. Hooking in to under sized snapper, skippy and leather jackets. All of the fish released and kicked of strongly. Hopefully it rains a liitle more next year so the buggers can swim out and clean themselves up a bit!

Last run before the ban - Two Rocks

Had a great day out on the water & managed a good feed to top it off!

Big thanks to Paul G for the helpful advice he gave my girlfriend Jess.. Couldn't imagine a better way to finish off the season an I FINALLY BEAT THE GF WITH THE FISH OF THE DAY!!

The big dhuey went for a 5" plastic on the light gear. Was the second fish of the day, but sent it back to make some babies. Ended up keeping the first and last Dhuies of the day which went 57cm and 65.. Great on the chew.

KOTC 2014 write up

As some of you are aware we ran King of the Cape for it's second year & I am so stoked to see it's growth albeit not without some serious blood n' tears by the committee, sponsors & volunteers plus the avid participation of competitors. So to them I can't thankyou enough for what you have given to our community & angling in general particularly Pflueger Salt Reels for coming on board & looking after the kids with all the awesome goodies!

Our focus is & will always be on the future generation of young anglers in the South West & beyond, getting them into our beloved sport & ensuring its future with catch / release style competitions. A previous post has highlighted a concern for me with geo tagging, sad that the exploitation of technology can undo others hard work & therefore I will only post my own pics & those I have permission to do so.

We started on a Friday evening & with the previous day being a cracker & the weekend forecast being average competitors were keen to get cracking that night, as you can see the bay was a pond with the wind yet to steam in. Thankyou to Dunsborough VMR for their hospitality, great blokes & all too keen to share our vision!

This year we got unbelievably fortunate to secure local artist Annie Heyring to carve a perpetual trophy for the annual comp which will reside at Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz, what an amazing piece & I have never seen any fish carving like it let alone the identical features of a Dhuie.

Most of you know Dave aka Xtreme Coolers who again was a big prize donator for us, I always enjoy fishing with him & his boys. This time around his eldest was unfortunately struck down with the dreaded school holiday lurgy leaving him green with envy as his younger brother got down to business catching his share too.

Young Bailey getting stuck into the squid early on the 1st day

That’s how you do it! Giving the biggest squid prize a good old nudge

The competitor’s toughed it out as the wind & swell swung in hard from the west, trying conditions for all with great resilience from the kids displayed. Whilst I was hitting up a bay mark that looked to be holding well we struggled to entice the pinkies for a chew & the young bloke puts another run on the board with his first dhu banger.

Black smoke billowing constantly on the horizon & nobody able to identify what it was saw us head out into the thick of the washing machine hoping nobody was in trouble. Ended up being a Chinese tanker with a serious smoke stack, happy days & even better that Bailey had some serious sea legs under him as we made a few drops wider but without joy.

Back in & grabbing a feed of plump whiting to make fish taco’s for Sunday night

Few beers with Seakem, Dave, Tiimmbo & the young lads that night whilst watching my young bloke pull some serious moves on the girls at the next table had me thinking of some stunts inspired bad grandpa style (pity that the better half was onto it quicker than I). Waved goodbye to Dave & Bailey & prepped for the next day with the wind forecasted to drop but late, needed a game plan that would see us back in time to set up for presentations.

Headed out with Damo & Habanero dodging whales & enjoying the sledging

Damo with a good flatty that had fillets of pure cream!

Amongst the smaller pinks this bruiser came courtesy of a jigged bonito from Habanero

Struggled to get the Dhu’s to chew & with Damo losing a good one to an unfortunate or hilarious (for us) mishap with a strong run & the braid catching his finger like wire on a block of cheese.

This sheila followed my line up some way as the last drop was over & time to get home, yep what a tin arse.

Conditions far better Sunday, my son hitching a ride with the boys

Will get some pics up from the other boys but here was the winning team slaying it, they played a smart game & good skippering from Toby saw them come romping home.

Edge with an absolute monster on an unusually quiet seriola front

He was having a day out too by the looks

Well done to PJ, Edge & Toby. Thoroughly deserved win fella’s

A quick late arvo run with the lads the next day but the sea breeze decided to say g’day early. Dave from DOS with a jigged dhu in some lightening quick drifts

Cheers to Seaquest, Dave, Toby & Mark for all of the hard work you put in.

Thankyou to our sponsors & our local community for enabling this event to occur

Well done to the winners in the categories & a special mention to the young forum member double header king aka Max for some cracking form in the junior section offshore.

I will make a few edits with more pics when I can get to my hard drive & add a few more in for those interested

Productive Day out on Monday

Went out on Monday with my mate Matt (FW member).

Left the ramp at around 7:45 and had a very rough trip out to the 3 mile, wondering if the forecasted wind drop was ever going to happen.

Anchored up on top of the reef, got 3 blackarse (one of which was legal - 35cm) and a few wrasse but nothing more.

After around an hour the anchor had slipped and the spot gone dead so we moved a few hundred metres to the south and dropped the pick once again.

We sight fished a couple of skippy, hooking quite a few but only landing 2 (one to me on the pen rod - great fun  )

And a couple of sambos on live wrasse which measured 86 and ~105 cm.

Not long after a noah of around 2.5m turned up and circled the boat for a good 30 mins or so.  Think it was a bronzie but not 100%

Hooked what was called for a pink, saw colour, only for it to spit the hooks

Finished off with a quick 20 min C&R tailor sesh in sh*thouse conditions, hooking 2, landing 1

All in all not a bad day, had sambo curry and fish cakes for dinner, didn't taste too bad, will definitely give them ago again should the opportunity present itself

Cheers

Hutch

How is Dawesville Cut fishing?

 Hi guys,

Thinking of heading down to the cut either thursday or friday afternoon and flick around some lures. Just wondering if anyine has fished there lately and had success. Will be targeting herring, whiting and hopefully some tailor.

Anyone getting crabs in the swan yet

 Hey guys

wondering how ppl have been getting on in the river with crabs?

Rotto containers, are the sambos there??????

Hi guys as the demersal ban is on (in a couple of days), has anyone been for a jig at the containers behind Rotto....? If so are the sambos around?????

Some Reds

My wife and I managed a deckie spot with my brother and sister in law on Saturday. We fished in the Daintree in the arvo but the out going tide was a bit quiet. Still we managed a nice Fingermark before dropping the missus off then heading offshore.

The bite was steady with not too many fish coming on baord but they were reasonable quality fish. I got blown away by one big fish, probably a Red Emperor which was annoying but we did end up with 5 Red Emperor to go with quite a few Large Mouth Nannygai, some Small mouth nannys and a couple of Spangled Emperor. All up we got around 20 fish.

It's nice to get a haul where not all the fish can fit on the table for a pic!!
