Heard they were different species, but read some more and looks like you're right. Also called australian barracuda. I wonder if the bigger cudas in australian waters are different to this one?
I know you get Barracuda up north and Barracoutta down south. Not the same fish but both very toothy. Not sure whether Pike or Snook are the same either...? Can anyone elaborate on this?
that boy right there is a long finned pike. not to good for eating but awesome cut baits. some ppl call em snook but snook and are actually a differnet species of fish that is one of the best eating fish ever. used to get them in south africa quite often. these ones there u can get em to about 70cm around gardern
Barracudas are the Sphyraena genus. Theres lots of species in the genus, one being the pike/snook/australian barracuda (Sphyraena novaehollandiae)
Barracouta is Thyrsites atun, which is not even in the same family. Though they can be known as snoek or snook adding to the confusion (and they look a bit similar)
coutas have a small fin like a sailfish. in esprence at certain times of the year they come in a massive school and u cant really fish. everything gets r#*%d. they do like very similar to pike and snook but with bigger teeth and the sail.

we call that a pike or snook
the pike snook name has been changed from pike to snook a couple of times and so on, doesnt matter, but what youre holding is a good eating fish

Definately a Snook as it is long and slender!
As Ryan said "sea pike" are shorter and stumpier (they also have distinct smell).
Either way I agree they are one of the best mulloway baits around.
