yeah i'm with daz, those flakes look pretty big for pearl perch, but i guess they'll do anything to flog off fish for $64.95 a frikkin kilo. i wonder what price they are flogging for southern dhufish? i have seen it for $85 skinned fillet not too long ago.

those mackie chunks look a little bit grey too.... fresh seafood my ar$e....

Nope .... those chunks are purported to be Swordfish , which is odd, cos I thought that flesh was WHITE

Unfortunately Scotto they are

Mon, 2011-01-10 19:58

slaughtering 25kg fish.  My recollection is that swordfish was not a fish that was regularly seen in wet fish shops or on the menu in restaurants 15-20 years ago in Australia.  At some time however it became popular / fashionable.  Whilst they are a fast growing fish imo it doesn't excuse the fact that fish in the 20-25kg bracket are being targetted around the world for commercial gain.  For those less informed these fish can grow to 1000lbs+.

Joke

Mon, 2011-01-10 17:42

Nothing on the tag makes sense

The young bloke behind the counter had not a clue, and gave some BS story.

Told him I had more clue than he did .... and the practice of incorrectly naming fish is now not only illegal but attracts huge fines and he'd be wise to get it sorted.

The manager tracked me down in the supermarket and I "believe" the sign will say something else tomorrow ........ be interesting to know what   LOL

Was easily the best looking fillets in there.

Oh Yeah

Mon, 2011-01-10 17:51

And while I'm on my soap box.......

The girl in the deli section let it slip that the size 10 cooked chickens aren't actually size 10 but size 9.

When I quizzed her about it, she said she knew because that was what the labels on the cartons stated, and their supplier didn't do size 10's fresh.

She couldn't change the pricing tags because they are generated by head office computers.

Buyer beware ;)

My guess would be Black Jewfish... fillets look pretty much the same as the Jewies I've got around Karratha. Definitely looks too big to be pearl perch.

Definitely looks like black jewfish chopped up... That price is just madness and in Broome where you could go catch a bluebone or coral trout off the jetty with a handline ! Give me a break.

IF

all Aussies realised that Mulloway are Australia wide, then there would be no Black Jewfish, maybe something simple like , Northern Mulloway.

Then the FD would have an easier job fining these corrupt pricks.

Mulloway or Black Jewfish

Tue, 2013-08-06 14:14

Not trying to get off topic, but mulloway and black jewfish are not the same fish. Mulloway are Argyrosomus japonicus and the black jewfish is Protonibea diacanthus. Totally separate fish species, both in the Scieanid family.

Sun, 2013-10-20 00:55

i live in broome and northern Jewfish that is sold at the one fish shop intown is usually under $30 a kg. They rarely have demersals and 90% of what they sell is thready or sw barra  ocassionally triple tail. They mainly net the creeks so these species are most common sometimes see goldband and thats about it but the quality is excellent. These boys gut there fish before they fillet out and im a a fussy fucker who would only by top shelf odourless fillets. I aint seen fillets there ever this expensive or as average lookin it is most likely from a supermarket not in broome upselling pearl perch. a tasty fish no doubt bot the price is certainly on the steep side.
