Can you eat them fish (chinaman ) overthere in WA. Because you can't over here in QLD (some kind of poison level or somthing ) not that I've caught one over here.
Gady doro,the condition of the fish being poisoned is called ciguatera poisoning, and it occurs mainly in coral finfish. It happens naturally through toxins gathered in there diet. Chinaman cod as well as red Bass and other larger reef fish species are a culprit for the condition. In WA we arent affected by it as badly as you guys on the east coast (i think there has only been a couple of reported cases in WA since the 70's). So only recently was the chinaman taken off the ciguatera list here in the west.
Which is good for us coz they are very good eating!!
I'm almost 100% sure the Chimaman fish in WA waters don't contain any levels of ciguatera (the poison you are refering to DORO). We eat all the chinaman fish we catch and so does everyone we know and have never experienced or heard of any problems. I know QLD is a different story however... I don't think guys over there even eat spaniards?
Yep, kept one from our recent Exmouth trip. Tasted pretty good, flesh was a bit firm after being frozen but apart from that I'd certainly keep one again.
Yeah they've been protected here in Queensland for the last couple of years. Even before they were protected most people in Queensland considered them vermin because of the Cig risk. Bit of a shame 'cause the look great and fight so hard.
too right they go hard, no surprise really (Family Lutjanidae), with cousins like Mangrove Jacks and Black Bass. Do you know how big they can grow...bigeest I've seen was about 8kg

I have a nice chinaman captured by Scotty on the next video installment of Andy Mac's Exmouth Expedition. We didn't weigh it, but it looks all of 5 or 6 kgs, maybe more. I'll get the vid to Adam over the next couple of days. Here is a pic of it.

Two for one deal at yopur local bommie! A 9kg Chinaman would give you a bit of curry...let alone two of the bloody things..really nice fish...would have gone for a bit of a gallop

I think they are protected in QLD waters now...not totally sure. This one came from the bunker group in QLD

Some of the big ones we've caught would have pushed 6kg. Seen much bigger ones caught though. You're right they fight good, taste really good too.
