Steaming

Wed, 2009-01-14 16:26

Yeh, its bloody steaming up here at the moment.  42 average since new years, 47 on Saturday and 47.1 the Monday before.  Not real pleasant being out in the midday sun trying to fish at the moment. :(

Yep just like swimming in a sea of Pee up here at the mo'. Have to get down your way this year Adam and get involved in your little boat big fish scene bro, looks like good fun.
I see on the news they had some water around the Overlander but the poor little buggers were just drowning in it.

When we were

Wed, 2009-01-14 20:48

cruising over to Exy from Tom Vegas on the 5th we saw the largest flocks of wild budgies I have ever seen in these parts , must have been a great hatching recently , but with the weather we've been having that will certainly thin them out a bit .

Overlander

Wed, 2009-01-14 21:00

Seems as though they reckon Overlander is the right place to fall off the perch.Sorry to see it happen but nature can be pretty harsh some times

Great hatching

Wed, 2009-01-14 21:05

According to The Department of Environment and Conservation's Shark Bay manager, Brett Fitzgerald,

"perfect conditions in the birds Murchison breeding grounds had produced a population explosion, forcing huge numbers to travel to areas with less water and shade."

THE WEST AUSTRALIAN 14/01/09

Still a sad thing to see, there were pics of budgies that had drowned in water bins because they were too exhausted to drink and keep out of the water at the same time.

There were also crimson chat, zebra finches and cockatiels descending on the Overlander...

Nature can be cruel, I hope the "population explosion" evens things out.

Mike

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

I saw them flying everywhere

Wed, 2009-01-14 21:18

I saw them flying everywhere while driving to Coral Bay on the 24th Dec, they went for kms. Drove back through 3 weeks later and saw heaps dead.

It was an amazing site seeing them flying, bit sad to see them all dead.

I saw a couple of parrots

Fri, 2010-02-26 20:09

I saw a couple of parrots trying to get water from my pond this arvo, so I turned on the sprinklers to cool them off.  Next thing I knew, the whole garden was full of birds.

Spent some time in the desert the last few years

Fri, 2010-02-26 20:15

and literally saw thousands of budgies fall of the perch, and zebra finches in small areas, in the heat. Looked like a war zone. Also reminds me of a time I was driving an OKA and left it running with the aircon on (Late 40's) whilst we walked to a water hole about a hundred metres away. Left a window down, didn't I and came back to find about 200 finches flying around the cab, birrd crap everywhere, had a good laugh afterwards.

wow thats pretty amazing... you would think that living in these areas the birds would adapt. but mind you that weather is fairly rare.
