Isn't it the darker a dhufish they are resident reef fish and the silver type are a schooling fish or along those lines , like the difference in color's on BA''s between a fish on reef and one off coral
but we've caught them in 60metre (dark) and 40metres (dark/light silver), we've been told by the pros that full moon they'll swim into the shallows 6-12metres to feed and then swim back out to 30+metres, who knows, either way they taste bloody nice. BA's we found deeper you go very dark orange in shallow (24metres) lighter but thats in Leeman, don't know if its different further down the coast (Perth)
BA adapt their colours from surounding habitat. Orange around coral, brown around rock/reef and there's in between which is noticable with a mix as its spent time at both etc. Small BA a general sign of pressured grounds as they're first to jump onto a bait.
Dhu's, dark brown fish with dark blotches are normally rezzys and the colours are more highlighted when dead. The silver/grey dhu's normally schooling fish with some bigger fish still holding that colour....more migratory!
yaeh there funny ol buggers !! i got 3 8kg dhus one day in bout 2m of water in gero all were really dark but also seen them really silvery too in the shallows and just recently got a 18kg that come out of 90m out from Grey that was really silvery !! hmmmmm more research is needed i think !!!! time to go fishing !! hahahah
From what I've seen diving they vary their colours based on habitat. They seem to do it pretty quick and dhus swimming in to check you out off the sand are often a really light colour. I've shot light coloured dhus and by the time I've taken a photo they have gone dark.
Top fish! Stoked to see it came from diving depths :)

Why is this fish so dark? Usually the stripe is more easily seen too? Great fish by the way!

I have had a dark one on the deck change to completely white and back to dark over about 20 seconds. It went that white it looked albino.
