Your target for 09

Just wondering what everyone's magic fish is for 09, or the type of fish you are going to put a lot of effort in to catch or better a PB?  Mine is definately to try and get a big blue marlin or 30kg plus GT on popper.  Whats yours?

Yer mines the Mulloway, never realy fished Secert Harbour since I live close to it always headed locally, but anyway its the Mulloway I want in 09, I don't know how I'll realy feel to weather I keep it for eating, it may look to graceful for me and I'll let swim, just to hold one and smell it with a image, isn't that fishing after all, look out mulla 09

would settle for either a big Mulloway or kingie assuming I am in SA (don't look like getting out anywhere else at this stage in 09).

Would like to be getting onto the bluefin again which have just appeared off streaky bay (as we speak) however am skipping the run this year due to other commitments (buying block of land).

Other than that anything over 1 -2 foot and from warmer waters would be good.

cheers

Tuna

Tue, 2009-01-20 15:09

I would love to get a tuna on lure around GI or Rotto - only ever seen the bird working a school once near stragglers last year and been wanting to try it ever since. Anyone who could give me any tips would be greatly appreciated!! I've got a couple of Halco Max lures that are blue / purple but any other recommedations?

My List Pick!

Tue, 2009-01-20 16:35

Karl, a mate of mine has been getting some good mulla between 8-30kg over the last year and recently also....he's fishing Medora way......New moon!

Matt T, Halco Max works well but you want to use some deep diving minnows also like Rapala X-Rap 30 (dark'ish colours) and work the West end of Rotto for descent YFT! Back of Garden Island & Stragglers are more Shark mackerel areas for me & smaller tuna. The Halco Max,mid divers and small skirted lures being the go!

To answer your question Adam;

Bonefish on Fly (Exmouth-February 09)

Big 30lb Barra (Fitrzroy-March 09)

Blue Marlin (Exmouth Game X-April 09)

Here's hoping Laughing

I have an extensive list

Tue, 2009-01-20 18:39

of fish I can hopefully catch during the exmouth trip in April/May. Red Emperor, sail/marlin, mackie, GT and so on. the usual suspects as I haven't been to exmouth fishing before.

And pretty much anything on fly. I have geared up with a 10wt now, so I'm looking to do a lot more SW fly. A sail on fly would be 10 shades of f**king awesome.

Metro YFT

Wed, 2009-01-21 07:27

That was last year's target but when you only get the boat wet 5 times in a year the chances of catching one are pretty slim.
Target this year is firstly to get te boat wet more often and secondly nail a YFT.Wink

Travelling away- any billfish up north. Got a few road trips planned so hopefully cross this one off before mid year.
Perth local- a good dhuie on anything and also a KG whiting on a popper will make me a happy boy. I've got them sussed on plastics in shallow water (>1.5m) so now it's just time to get one off the top.

good question

Thu, 2009-01-22 06:29

Wouldnt mind getting a marlin myself - have got everyone else one however I only seem to crack the sails :P Oooo and a barra

Also dont care who gets it but my boat needs a nice GT and a bloody wahoo as pretty much the only fish yet to grace the deck. Will be happy then

Other than that getting other people their firsts and also doing more photography above and below the water is my priority for this year.

Wahoo on fly

Wed, 2009-02-18 10:43

Actually i was gonna say a spaniard on fly, but seeing as though Gully requested a 'hoo for his boat, I'll be generous and revise it to - a 20lb Wahoo on Fly in Exy this year. Any bigger and I'll burn my palm to the bone!!!

Or (also to be nice to Gully) I'll volunteer to crack the GT hoodoo on his boat as well - just the kind of guy I am...

But Number 1, above hook and line captures, is definitely filming a bait ball getting flogged by billys or macks...

 Nice one Ads!

Cheers,

Ewan

Salmon on stickbait,

Wed, 2009-02-18 11:08

Salmon on stickbait, Dolphinfish, GT (even just a couple of kilos is fine), KGs, any shark, Baldie on a jig. Pretty much any species I can think of jigging. Lots others I'll try for, but thats at least the start of the year list.

A near shore keeper Dhuie in local waters from my boat would do me nicely.

Check that one off my list - YAH HOO.

Depending on fork length or full length. 160cm full is close to 60kg, 150 or so about 50kg. Minus about 20cm for big fish if measured to the fork. With fish between 20-30kg it it gets a bit harder just to estimate from length because some can be very fat, others very skinny. The most accurate measure is to use the formula below, apart from weighing fish in a sling: "We have found that the following formulas are the most accurate giving a mistake of +/-1.5 kg: GT up to 30 kg and over: (girth x girth x fork length x 2.74) /100000 GT up to 40 kg and over: (girth x girth x fork length x 2.70) / 100000 GT up to 50 kg and over: (girth x girth x fork length x 2.60) / 100000" -

Modest wish

Wed, 2009-02-18 12:33

Mine is pretty modest - to find more time to go fishing.

Once there I would like to nail a barra (any size) while up in Hedland with work - I am up there once a week for a day or two so hopefully i can get out and nail one.

I also want a bream over 40cm on a lure and I want to nail a WA trout on fly and a flattie on fly.

GT, Dogtooth, Marlin, Sailfish and YFT

Sun, 2009-12-06 13:05

Yeah im running out of time but can I do most of it in one trip.

Im heading over to Tonga in 10 days or so and hoping to get a GT on a popper, I have never chased them so finger crossed. Also I have been told that the odd sailfish gets caught very close to the rocks, once again I have never chased them but I have some stickbaits with there names on them.

While on im the case I want to jig up a Dogtooth and a YFT and catch a marlin on my stella 20,000SW, can it all be done we will see haha.

Report to follow.

Garfish

Herring

KG Whiting

Stingray

Dhufish (not size though)

Devil fish

Next year i hope to add A wide range of pelagics to that list and all the demeresals down here + maybe some of the up north demersal species.

Going to put some time into

Thu, 2009-12-10 07:21

Going to put some time into trolling the deeper water off Cape Naturalist.

Goal is to catch a good sized YFT or maybe a marlin.

Have heard rumors of blue marlin being caught in the area.

Also will keep and eye on the bottom for Hapuka etc.

Any info on trolling of the cape would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Metro spaniards this season is my target fish

Thu, 2009-12-10 08:29

Heard there quite sparse but thats all the more challenging. And on those super fine, slack tide days i might break into the 300's for a bass groper
