Woodman Point advice please?
Hey guys,
to start with i'm a real novice at fishing.
Anyway me and a mate went to the groyne at Woodman's Point this morning to try for some herring
and the thing was that we were chucking the burley out there and the herring seemed to be very interested in it there were heaps
swimming around the top and sometimes jumping up and stuff. However we were never able to hook up at all? It was so annoying!!!
Would anybody know what we were doing wrong? We were using a running burley cage with around 40cm leader to a small hook.
Tried big and small bits of bait (whitebait and prawns) and I was able to only bring one herring in off a whole whitebait.
My mate also caught a snook with a halco twisty and I got a whiting only to lose it right at my feet :(
thanks guys,
Kav

It sounds like you were
It sounds like you were doing almost every thing right, it might just be that the fish werent on the bite, altho usually when there jumping there quite fired up, one thing i would recomend is using multiple hooks and they must be sharp, either try a snell which is two hooks for the one long bait eg.. white bait, strip of squid or try a small gang they have much better hook up rate. I've also found that fresh bait works the best so maby if u catch a herring try using small strips on a gang or snell.
im guessing that your using mono line, if your keen to improve ur hook up rate and have a heap more fun then maby upgraiding to braided line could be an option,
cheers

I'm surprised
your car was still there and not broken into. I'd consider that a win - actually catching a fish is a distant second in the equation.
Use the exact same set-up but try running a blob/float to keep the bait up higher in the water column instead of a burley cage. If they are already there and active there is no need to keep the burley going until they go quiet - you are just giving them a free feed otherwise.

Try!
I'm asuming you were off the small rock groyne! Use a fixed floating (white foam inside with blue or black dots) wire burley cage and often when you berley your getting them to search for small things so i prefer maggots and a small suicide hook.
Dont over feed them as Huggy said, small amount often and you dont need to refil your cage on ever cast....just when things slow down. I also put a few drop of aniseed lquid (cheap to buy) on my maggots.....the herring & gardies love it and helps them track your bait!

Lol HuggyB. That's the biggest reason I've stayed off Woodman Point. Sad that there's people who spoil the fun for others. Having said that, Woodman Point was a great fishing spot, haven't tried it in years though. Heard friends talking about fishing there 5 years+ ish ago. He said there were so much fish on feeding frenzy that ciggy butts even worked! Not sure if it's that true though. :P
