Wire trace for tailor or not???

Years ago when tailor fishing I lost my rigs on a couple of occasions.

So I started using quite fine, black trace leaders and never had another bust off to a tailor. I never had major success apart from one occasion at south beach in Fremantle off the rock groyne where me and a mate smashed about a dozen each in half an hour to an hour.

As I'm now getting back in the game and doing a bit of reading it seems tailor could be put off by wire leaders...I've also just browsed my old 'fishing the wild west' book and under mulloway it says you shouldn't use a wire trace as it turns mulloway off.

So does anyone use these or is it a no go...

I never used wirefor em. With ganged mulies, always hooked em on the stinger or end hook, and lure wise, only had a hook on the end too, but would have to worry if a big greeny woofed it down I guess.

Wire

I have been bitten off by many a tailor over the years, particularly when fishing for bream in the surf in the early morning or evening.  As tim-o says, it depends upon where you hook them as tailor teeth will slice light mono fairly easily.  I believe the wire has a definate impact on the liklihood of a fish taking your bait - if you threw a single hook on a wire trace you will get less bites than fishing the same conditions with a mono trace - I have seen this happen time and time again.  I reckon it has something to do with how the bait presents in the water.

For a long time I used the really light 20lb wire and kept it as short as I could.  You just need to protect the line just above the hook.  That worked really well as you still had a mono trace to help the bait present.

Have caught a few tailor lately in WA using a snelled pilchard on 50lb mono and have not have a bust off yet.  That seems to suggest that 50lb is strong enough to withstand the teeth.

When the tailor are on, I don't think it really matters as they will smash anything.

I have been bitten off once

I have been bitten off once or twice but if you bait up your mullie with the head facing the leader end of your gangs they usually get taken on the bottom hook. however an inch or two of single strand trace wire probably wouldn't hurt.

 Hey Guys,

For years I have been using 50lb mono rig setup. Paternoster with snelled suicide hooks. This is the best type of rig to use for beach fishing.

Your strike rate is increased by 50% in comparison to ganged hooks. The snelled hooks can be wrapped around the pilchard and also, you wont loose your bait.

The only thing that will slice through this rig is a 2m Bronzie. Caught one last summer, brought it 20m close to me and them a bust off. Sliced through the 50lb mono.

I will never use a wire trace, as it is not a reliable source. Your strike rate is decreased, as the weight and site of the trace is noticed by the fish.

This is a most trust style of rig.
