Whitsundays

Hello, Heading out to the Whitsundays end of June and chartering a power cat for a week. Anyone got any tips on fishing over there? Thinking we will probably do some trolling (Tuna? Spanish Mackeral?) and a bit of reef fishing. Would be good to hear any suggestions on what gear to bring, what lures to try and also any general areas which are worth a go! Also any other general touristy Whitsundays recommendations?

Cheers

Rob

I went and got hitched on Brampton, plenty of lil gts and queenys landbased, fun on light gear, some nice snorkeling spots too. Took a flight to whitehaven beach then landed at a pontoon and freedove a hole in the barrier, bloody nice place up there when the weathers good. Can only imagine how good the offshore fishin is. Think Hamilton island is good if you got kids.

Check your fishing regs very carefully.  thete are parts where you cannot even have a fishing line on deck....  having said that, it is a wonderful holiday.  did it 2001. best holiday i have ever had.

I lived in Airlie Beach and on Hamilton Island for a few months but didnt do a lot of fishing due to being there for the $$$ and working crazy hours. Hamilton Island is amazing, but the main thing I remember is a carton of Extra Dry being around $80-90!!! A dive/snorkelling charter is a must, even if it's not out to the Barrier Reef.

Arrrrhhhhhh, thanks for informing me of that in 2013!  Because in 2001, we decided to snorkle around the mooring area at the end of Nara Inlet!!!  Visibilty was shit, so i reckon there were probably half a dozen hammerheads cruising just out of sight all the time while we were in the water!!!  thanks for sharing....  that was back in the days where i felt as safe in the water as i did out of it!
