Whites run predictions?
Submitted by Reefsta on Sat, 2023-11-11 12:24
Anyone got thoughts on the most likely timing for the whites this year? I've been potting last few weeks but only reds and the majority berried females. Last year the expert at Fisheries thought it could be ealry November due to slightly higher water temperatures, but it wasn't ue to a surprise cooler water pulse in November that delayed things From what I have gathered, on an average year where coastal seawater temperature is 20 or above, ealry to Mid- to late November is normal for the run, but last year it was patchy and around Perth metro seemed to only really get going from about 7 December. Anyone thinking this month is still likely, or could it be December like last year?

Full moon
Run usually starts after the full moon imo

Makes sense
Thanks. I was wondering about the moon, but despite the lunar cycle being very important for spawning in many marine species I couldn't find anything definitive about it triggering the cray migration. Had only heard that water temperature was a key for the run to kick off, along with a bit of swell coming through. Anyway, full moon being 28th November I'm guessing then onward might be good time to focus on..

The christmas trees are
The christmas trees are flowering as is the seaweed so i thought it was going to happen earlier. I got 22 degree water temperature behind GI a couple of weeks ago but only 20.5 at Parker POint.
My folks have two pots in at Shoalwater and said there are no pots around them. They have 2 crays in 2 weeks
The spot I swim at at GI that always has crays has nothing at all
Land has certainly dried out and warmed up early this year so its all a bit different.
If i recall correctly, last year didnt really have a wave of crays south of the river?

crays
Pulled my pots this morning got one white the other pot got hooked up and lost a couple of battens so could have been more, it had a hard shell so molted early by the looks of it. After the next moon they should run then the moon won't matter. i had full pots on a full moon last year.

Went for a quick swim in Shoalwayer with the kids snorkeling on top. Saw 8 kakka reds...was going nice untli the shark chopper flew low, circled and sounded its siren a bit too close to us. Mum and kids straight on the reef while i swam over to the boat to play Uber.

Dropped my pots in 15m behind
Dropped my pots in 15m behind GI on saturday and with my folks on board, went down to pull theirs in Shoalwater. Got 12 size onboard. 4 pots with 1, 1, 0 and 10. All pots are side by side.
Pulled mine on saturday. Still lots of spiderwebs on them and managed 7. I am pleased.
Cant believe how many pots are just behind the reef at GI.

Shocker
Having an absolute shocker off sorrento 8-12m. Unless last week when i was away its was hot and i missed it, otherwise its a shocker.
Normally can get a good feed out there but might have to rethink it next year and join the clownshow on the northside of the channel.
Anyone else have hillarys success this year?
Cheers

that comment cracked me up... I feel the same don't even eat the dirty fuckers but yet I spend all this money on chasing them. Shit year for me too, guessing they went really early and I was too busy procrastinating whether or not I was going to bother. Still got a few for the family and friends

For me, spots that fired
For me, spots that fired last year have produced nothing this year, whilst other spots have bagged on a single pot..
Get some long ropes and more fuel, or park em up for the year - they've headed deep already.
I'll probably pull them in this weekend.

I'm glad to hear it's not
I'm glad to hear it's not just me having a crap time. I've resorted to just fishing for reds now, only saw 3 whites in 3weeks. Fished the back of the centaur for 2 weeks for one occy then moved further north last week and have managed a few feeds but nothing to brag about. Gonna do more road miles next year and less pulls for more rewards hopefully.

Chasing them to 40+ with the weather forecast doesn't make sense. At least the pros will make a few bucks with BOBs leading up to Chrissy.

Anyone else having problems
Anyone else having problems with their pots being tampered with this year off Mandurah? Last 2 pulls they have kindly left the gates open and about 150 meters of the mark. Spoke to fisheries at the ramp and there have been quie a few more complaints this year than normal. Would love to catch them in act. I am beginning to wonder if it worth it anymore. Over it to say the least

Or big zippy ties. Been a few people I know out from rocko same thing gates open hanging. Quick pull open gate , tip crays out , dump pot gone. Too easy for them.

Hillarys
Killed it again this year out of Hillary's behind Little Island.
Run started about 25 Nov and went for about 10 days, mostly bag outs. It's well over though. Just getting the odd white (one this morning) and all red with lots of berries/tar.
We have 4 pots in 30mtrs still and it's a mix of Jumbo males and berried females. Our pots come in at the end of the week, we have enough and the 5am starts are getting old.
