Each to there own in regards to rubber versus air. I prefer rubber and i would go a aimrite if your looking for a kick arse gun. Made to order carbon fibre and australian made.
Mitch I was in a similar position to you about a year ago, got my first real speargun last year and havent looked back.
I'm a bit of a brand whore so Cressi does it for me. I'm currently using a small sioux 50 that has been heavily modified for reef work around Rockingham. I love it and its a rubber gun. I can pick off King Georges at 3 metres perfectly every time I see them. Looking for get something bigger soon though as my skill improves.
there no question. you just cant get enough versatilty out of air as you can with rubbers. with rubbers you can power it to your liking, and it never runs out or weakens after time. i am in a large dive club. i only know one person who uses air when not on scuba, and he rarely uses its any way and its a 1.4m gun. stick with rubbers :) get a rabbitech stealth or apex 1.1 if shore diving shallow, 1.2 if boat diving reef mainly, 1.3 for pelajics and bottom dwellers but in deeper water and 1.4 for pelajics and deep water reef
also don't go out and buy those cheap ones from places like BCF etc. go to a proper dive store and speak to them. Also size is also relevant, I have two guns, 90cm for reef work, and 120 for more open-water work, just think where you would use it most.
rob allen tuna 110 (double rubber) or a sparid 110 (single rubber) or the new omer cayman et in 115 is nice gun all priced round the $500 mark, 110 is a good allrounder size reef to bluewater.
Most spearos use railguns these days mate. Ive found a 1.2m seems to be about the right size for hunting the demersal and pelagic species around our coast. Some people may use a little longer if there chasing pelagics specifically.
Im not a fan of one brand being better than the others, when you break it down they are a peice of aluminium tube with a rail in it, rubber power bands and a very simple trigger mechanism. This is regardless of it being a cressi, ra, freedivers, pelaj, undersea ect ect. If you look at the different guns, once you take the stickers off you would hardley be able to tell the difference. Some of the so called best guns have majority plastic trigger mechanism and have had many product recalls from accidental spear discharges. Im not talking top end guns like kes, riffe ect but they are a different price range.
The one thing I will say is that what ever brand you go for make sure you get a high quality spring steel spear and that replacement spears dont cost an arm and a leg. Theres nothing worse than a spear that bends like jelly. Look at adreno spearfishing online they have a good selection.
I have a Seac Sub (70 I think) and a 110 Rob Allen. I choose the Rob Allen every time.
The rubber just seems quicker and more accurate.
The pnumatic has its place. Being alot more compact we always throw it on the boat as a backup or if one of the girls wants to have a go.
Also remember when choosing your gun size how you are going to transport it. I own a 110 which when unloaded fits JUST into the back of the ute. My mates who all own 120's have to put theirs diagonally across the ute or hanging out the back which can be a hassle if travelling offroad with a ute full of gear.

Cressi Geronimo Elite
Band spearguns get my vote too.
Less problematic, easier to repair and maintain, no issues with bent spears etc etc
The Cressi Geronimo Elite is on my Xmas list

Wow! KG's every time! I need to sharpen up. Band guns way more accurate than air IMO.

for me if you a purest and
for me if you a purest and very hard core it has to be a rail-gun and a Rob Allen for me.
but for covience and quick usage when the opertunity is around to get a fish, when not hnting one, then a pneumatic.
over the years I have had both, including an early Cressisub pneumatic and later a CO2 cartridge powered one.
If I get another spear gun and as I'm not hard core spear fisherman, it would a be pneumatic like the Mares 70cm or a Seac Sub Asso 65cm.
but thats just my choice, but like Fords & Holdens
