What type of fish is this?

I think it's a seargent baker but seems pretty big for one????

It was about 60cm.

If it is then I've found another dhui spot on 5 fathom Smile

As I didn't know what it was I released it.

Thought it might have been, should have kept it for bait. Oh well, where there is bakers there are Dhuis, though looking at the size of this one, not many have been around for a while.

They're size 6/0 hooks I'm using.

Bakers have pretty big

Bakers have pretty big mouths for their size. Even a small one could swallow a 6/0. Very aggressive too, love the jigs.

Caught them up to about 60-70cm i think, so bigger ones are out there.

I tried filleting one

Sun, 2010-10-03 06:42

I tried filleting one earlier this year and it tasted pretty good.  From memory, was as good as or better than the Blackarse we caught BUT....  I wouldn't bother again because there are just too many tiny bones to try and fillet out.   I only ended up with a very small fillet from a pretty big fish (55-60cm) but I just wanted to see what they tasted like.  It's probably worth doing once though just to have a taste!

We get

them down here in big sizes 60-70cm on 10/0's. As soon as you fillet one for bait you'd know not to eat them. Bones, bones, bones. Great dhuie bait though!Wink

Always glad to see people releasing fish when they don't know what they are...unfortunate that you missed out on some great bait, but no doubt you will get plenty more, nice photo and I'm sure a few on here would've benefitted from this thread, explaining what the fish is, etc.
