Herring will eat anything.

I used to catch heaps on just the handle piece of disposable razors as a lure. Same idea as lumo tube.

Tue, 2012-10-23 19:02

offshore up north i caught plenty of small baldchin groper, spangled emperors, spanish flags etc just using white bread on a hook as bait. was a bit tricky because i only had one chance to jag em because the bread would fall off after one bite. iv'e used this trick a few timies when iv'e had no bait

bbbig lure

Tue, 2012-10-23 20:02

Haha , last year at a albany beach the kiddies drove the quad through a small coastal creek

at the back of the dunes adjoining the beach,

as they did, they scared 2 huge herring ( caught in there) onto dry land

and proudly arrived back at camp , with no bait or fishing gear, but a nice feed for lunch!!

Bloody expensive way to get 2 herring ,

cost of quad and trailer/ divided by 2 fish.

Unusual bait

Tue, 2012-10-23 20:28

Ok it is normally edible but recently caught a 30+ cm mangrove jack on the Hamma lure by halco, g-train colour. I don't own shares but these babies speak for themselves, anyway had jack at my feet thinking it was a bit small for a feed when a decent barra took a swipe at it. Called out to my friend only 10 metres away to get over and have a flick to see if we could entice our larger predator to come along when, this time it had a real go taking the lure and somehow dislodging the lure from one lucky jack. Only happened this year chopper fishing in the Kimberleys so vivid in my memory, 830mm barra was a good memory from this day.

Tue, 2012-10-23 20:24

A mate and I took out 2 mates who love fishing but really have not a lot of idea. Took them off two rocks and it was really slow didn't catch much for a few hours one of them as a joke put a piece of the muesli bar he was eating on a hook and to our amazement he wound up his first dhuie of around 7-8kg. Couldn't believe it!

Chicken

Wed, 2012-10-24 09:00

We quite regularly use raw chicken when we fish and the herring seem to love it. Buy some drumsticks and just cut chunks off, works out cheap bait.

Nicotine chewing gum

Mon, 2012-11-12 15:58

Ran out of bait at the opening to the cut yrs ago. Lots of gardies. All I had was some Nicotine gum. Even gardies addicted to Nicotine as they hit the gum with gusto. Not mouthing it as normal but straight down the gob. Laughed for ages about this.
