What rod?

HI Guys & Girls

I recently got myself a Saltist 6500 and filled with 50lb braid now I am on the lookout for a rod, I intend for this outfit to be a bit multipurpose from trolling to poppering. I have only really looked at a monster mesh 8ft and a shimano GT Tcurve 8ft, I am fairly new to this heavy kind of fishing as prev I was mostly lure fishing for Bream with 1-2lb rods and 2-4lb line

Budget would be upto price of GT Tcurve, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Trolling on both braid and a

Trolling on both braid and a spinner is kind of bad news.

Braid has zero stretch and its good to have a little absorber on your side when tiy're dragging stuff in the water.

On a lever drag, you adjust your max drag, flip the reel out of gear and let the lur go back to where you want it, then pull it forward till the lure isn't taking line, then set the clicker.

On a spinner, you're forever flipping the bail over and back, fiddling with the drag nob, no clicker and no idea where your drag max is after awhile.

Till is right re trolling

Till is right re trolling with a spinning reel however I have done it before and it can be done if you dont want to purchase two outfits etc.  I set the drag for strike and then ajust it once a fish is on.  Can be done just dont screw it up too tight once a fish is on and maybe back off towards the closing stages.

Also from my experience I would avoid any rod for trolling (such as the monster mesh) if it has a split but section -  dont get me wrong I have a monster mesh and love it as a rod apart from the split butt section, this goes for any rod with a split butt (i.e. a short section of blank not hypalon or similar for the whole length on the bottom grip). I have found this section sits on the (top) edge of the rod holder and doesn't grip against the rod holder as well as a rod with a full length grip.  Be carefull you dont lose the whole outfit overboard as I nearly did.

Cheers

Paul

Ahh thanks for that Paul - yes, split grips are the devil for trolling.

Poppering, you need a brute stick with a tough tip to get em working, you also need a little compromoise so that the effort doesn't kill you if you get a fish. Trolling you just want a parabolic bend. You can get jiggers to do double duty trolling, just poppering is the opposite kind of rod!

Really you can get a cheap troller combo for just a few hundred bucks, so I'd do that. You see specials around the place for the TLD20 and a rod to match, its not fancy but it does work fine. It can do double duty with the release weight the rest of the time.

Lemax FerariStik

The Lemax FerariStik would suit your needs butch.

Have a squiz here...

As a popping rod it's claimed plenty of scalps locally and o/s and would be fine for trolling. Just don't set your drag too tight given it's not its primary function.

Heh I didn't realise that having a commercial interest in a product made it a great allrounder!
