VHF radio

I have a ICOM VHF radio which is under 2years old and dont use very often as its more for up north or long runs when the 27 meg starts to fail, i have noticed since new on the display it always says BUSY until i turn the squelch up past one third then it drops ( busy ) off the display, but when i was out on the water today i decided to check its operation and found the rescue guys appear to hear me but i could not hear them, but occasioanly i could hear other boats,  Does anyone know of a NOR company that can test in boat setups for radio peformance etc

Does it have a high/low power switch on it?If it does make sure it's on high power,a lot of people including myself have been caught out by not checking.

the rescue guy could have thiers on low power also. i'd be asking a radio comms company that do installs of vehicles to test it quickly, as long as you can get to the antenna connection they can do it in a matter of minutes, just need to check the forward and reverse power of the unit and the mute threshold. only companies i can think of at the moment are Marcomm at the airport and Memo Communications as we deal with them at work.

Squelch problem

If you have the squelch turned to far it reduces the distance that you can pick up other transmissions. Next time you are out turn the squelch fully back and try to contact the sea rescue then, but do it from a distance offshore. I have a VHF that is 15 years old and I was able to pick up Mandurah Sea rescue from 22nm of Mindarie.
