I dont know why you'd bother

to be honest - champagne price tag (~$1000) for a watered down Stella which you can buy that model for maybe $100 - $200 more?

what is it you dont like about the stella?

stella sw

Wed, 2009-09-16 17:36

i think its over size first if all. then it doesnt look that great, it feels like it has no balls like its abit flimsy.  im pretty dissapionted in shimano because of this reel. i think they took the best reel on the market and stuffed it up. the fa was big enough but they made it bigger. the colours look very cheep and china like. I know you love them mate and there still a good reel but they did not improve one bit on the fa and the price tag is over the top. i wonder what they were thinking because i wouldnt trade my 10000FA for a SW.      I just feel like they realy let us down with the quality and so we get a lesser reel for a gigger price!!!

I'm not sure how you can

Wed, 2009-09-16 18:50

I'm not sure how you can substantiate those claims vinicius. The new Stella is lighter than its old equivalent, has much better line-lay and are more powerful, requiring less effort to wind the same weight (via a new way of gearing the reel - best explained in pictures). I believe they have made some improvements for casting as well.

As for the twinpower sw8000pg, I believe the old FA is a better model, given that they are roughly the same price. There seems to be a fallacy in your logic, because the Twinpower SW is built on the new Stella's body and some of its gearings. If anything the Twinpower is 80% of the current Stella SW.

The older Twinpower HG/PG is 80% of the old Stella FA.

I'm happy with either to be

Wed, 2009-09-16 17:54

I'm happy with either to be honest, the price rise would have happened on the FA's if they were still around anyway. So you would be paying roughly the same price between the two. I'd prefer the SW stella over the FA for about the same or a little bit more.

But i don't have much info on the new twinpower, haven't played with one yet. But i definitely agree with Huggy.

I wouldnt go back to an FA

Wed, 2009-09-16 18:42

I wouldnt go back to an FA after my SW. after using the 10k FA popper casting for 3hrs and then to pick up and use my 18000SW its a joy. Shimano made the best reel even better. Ill sell you my 8k FA so i can buy the SW.

yeh....I can second that.

yeh....I can second that.

People whinge at the weight of the FA stellas, now they made it lighter. This also explains why it doesnt feel as solid as the older model. The heavy weight made the old FA feel solid but thats just it, HEAVY!!

Theyve actually done more improvements than the old model. Its the small improvements theyve done that made the new Stellas even better.

I personally would prefer the new Stellas over the old one. The new spool helped with the casting alot. The new main gear and pinion combination is better now. Incidentally if it needs replacement you'll have to replace both parts together as they are made in pairs, so they match perfectly to each other.

Ive got my eye on another one atleast. There's actually quite abit of difference in price between the SW Twinpower and the SW Stella. There's also less sizes to choose from. If you want a big reel, the Stella is the only choice. The SW Twinpower is only up to 10000 which is actually smaller than the previous 10000FA Stella.

You'll find the new SW

Wed, 2009-09-16 19:41

You'll find the new SW Twinpower is based on the new SW Stella, not the previous model Stella.

The Twinpower uses the same body, rotor, spool and chassis as the stella. Materials used to make the main gear, worm drive gear, pinion, and other minor parts are different.

Just think of it as the Daiwa's equivalent of the Catalina's and Saltiga's

I just bought a new Okuma

Wed, 2009-09-16 19:52

I just bought a new Okuma SALINA II 16000 Spinning Jigging Reel off eBay for about $130 AUD. Gonna spool it up with some 80lb Whiplash. Just need another rod now to go with it, that makes 2 rods I need now. Another one being auctioned on there now from same seller, bids @ $1 as I write this.

Cheers
Dale

I think some of Okumas max

Wed, 2009-09-16 20:02

I think some of Okumas max drags are over rated. I would think that 80lb is overkill for  this reel.

GO BLUES.

Be interesting to try out

Wed, 2009-09-16 21:12

Be interesting to try out though. I've been sending Okuma a few suggestions that they've taken on board for other reels they make. These Salina's are not made for Australian market, but will get here soon enough. But for mine, I think Okuma are probably the best value for money out there at present. I'm yet to use my V System V55 that I bought but just the feel of it tells you it's quality.

Cheers
Dale

Yes a lot of the new stuff from Okuma is goo value for sure, and the lifetime warranty is very handy, because on quite a few of theyre reels, you'll need it. jmo.

I don't think anyone's upset - this has been a very mature and hopefully helpful discussion.

and I tell you one thing - re price tag Stella SW

Wed, 2009-09-16 22:45

its not any cheaper to get them from the states recently, even from ebay and with a reasonably good exchange rate. The absolute cheapest I have seen is US$830 but most are up around the US$1000 - US$1100 mark. By the time you add freight and convert it, there is little difference in price to what you can get them here for.

So while they may seem expensive, we are pretty much on par with the rest of the world in that sense.

The twinpower SW is near on US$700 delivered which in todays terms is near enough A$800. Given a Stella SW8000 is $1100 locally, I can't see why you wouldn't just buy the Stella?

And lastly - brass pinion (TP and FA) v hardened stainless steel pinion (more durable and stronger).

Okuma Salina II

Sun, 2009-12-06 17:46

Guy's just following up on the old thread, just wondering Dale, have you had a chance to use your Salina II? Would you recommend anyone else buy one? I am currently using a Stella 20000 (jigging and bottom bouncing) but would like to buy a spare reel just in case someone comes out on the boat and doesn't have there own gear or just as a spare to the Stella. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
