Turtle Dove Shoal

Has anyone fished there before? I've been thinking of planning a long trip out there from Dongara with a few mates (not my boat). Has anyone done it and what was the result?

Big Boat

Thu, 2008-05-29 18:26

I was talking with Greg nextdoor and he has a 6.8m Trailcraft with a long range tank. We need another boat to join us, something like the Abrolhos 8000 of Andrew's (Commodore Marine) to make the trip safe, as its a long way offshore. The area just screams fish so it is something on the wish list.

Out from Port Denison. So a couple of hours to get there and a full day on the water then back by dusk.
It would be a bit of an adventure. Greg and I are keen to do it, just need a few boats to join in for safety.

Over a weekend

Thu, 2008-05-29 19:11

We were thinking of heading up on a friday arvo then launching before daylight and getting out there Saturday early, fish through to a few hours before dusk and head home. Then fish local waters or Pelsart Bank the next day.
Just need the planets to align with dates and weather.

Google has little info on Turtledove Shoals and currently my fishing is done vicariously. What is out there? Its about half as far out again as the Hillarys FAD, just much bigger swell out there?

Thu, 2008-05-29 21:57

Crayfished out of Dongra for about 4 years and the only trouble is the weather

Its a long way to turtle dove so safety is a must..

Might be a good idea to ring Port Denison Sea Rescue to get an idea on the weather conditions first.

the distance is about the same as traveling to Turtle Bay from Denham-2 hours

Weather is #1 priority

Thu, 2008-05-29 22:01

Absolutely Danny,
The weather needs to be perfect for that type of trip and in a good ocean going boat too. I'd never contemplate it in my boat that's for sure. Need VHF radio as it stoo far for UHF.
What's the ground like out there? Is it littered with bombies or flat coral and ledges?
Would even consider trolling the big drop off behind the shoals for pelagics.

Heres a little piece of trivia for you guys:

If you took all the deckies interested in going, and lined them up head to toe, you would reach from perth to the shoal.

Now, anyone needing a 'link' in the chain for the tripLaughing

Thu, 2008-05-29 22:17

the turtle dove shoals show up on the g p s  the ground looks damn good from what i can tell. i zoomed right in on them when i was up in denison with my boat 23 foot glass i may be mad at times but you would definatly need a few boats to go out there and feel safe.i have done the trip from denham to turtle bay several times its a long way but protected. my gues you would need to carry about 300 ltrs of fuel just in case it turns bad which it can in denison.

Russ is right, this is not a regular every day trip and would need a lot of planning and preparation and the most perfect weather possible, with safety still being paramount. Its not something we would be taking lightly I can assure you.
I'm sill interested in hearing if anyone has actually fished the area and what they caught.

300 liters for what size

Thu, 2008-05-29 23:36

300 liters for what size boat and motor?

I have decent range with 228 liters.

I think that any piece of water needs to be respected.   If anyone has a link to some reading material on the subject, I would appreciate it.

Thu, 2008-05-29 23:59

Thats no different to the bank I went out to off Kalbarri. 70km straight out.

I went out in 18kt southerlies and came in with a 25kt seabreeze. If its the sort of weather you would go out in anyway, whats the difference. Only the travel time and fuel used.

For a more comfortable day fishing you would want a nice day so you dont have to spend 2 1/2 hours bashing your way out like I did but dont think it has to be glass either.

Long Range

Fri, 2008-05-30 08:10

Pete we only discussed it the other night trying to come up with a new destination that was a bit out of the way. It might have to wait a while to come to fruition but keen to get a better understanding of the place for now.
I would love to stay overnight there but unsure of how protected the waters are. Pat's experience of a 70 footer capsizing is not what I wanted to hear.Surprised

The guy who operate the charter boat from denham worked out our fuel for us and added an extra 100ltr just incase it blow up . one of our trips home took 3 1/2 hour because of the weather and i am sure glad i listened to them because we nearly use the whole 220 ltrs  it was so rough and had to head right into it, towards the island for what we thought would be calmer wrong again LOL.

We are running a 350 chevy motor which is normally very economical normally use 140 ltr for the 4 hour round trip aprox.

Wouldnt waste my Time

Fri, 2008-05-30 19:49

Hey fellas, the place used to be good about 10yrs ago. But since the hardships

of the cray seasons it has been flogged.

Last Tues night i was speakinng to one of the best wetliners on the coast, Slack Willock and he agreed.

We used set drop lines allover it when we were fishing.

Hope you guys have luck, Take care fellas.

I t is alot safer being in a 65ft Conquest than a 20 footer.

Fuel if you work on using 2 ltr's per nm you would'nt be far from the mark,200 ltr's would be a good guess for the day.
