What sppeds to people recommend when trolling!
I have my own ideas but i am probably wrong and would love to hear the speeds for:
The billies
Macks
Coral trout and other bottom lure hitters
Squid (i think this one is obvious - as slow as the boat will go)
Look forward to some help.
Cheers
Neels

trolling
Im certainly no expert but i always seem to get strikes when turning or stopping.salmon, bonito, tuna etc
with this in mind i have slowed my trolling speeds down to around 4kts as it seems more productive
i think the weather conditions play a part too as on really clear sunny days they seem to go for a faster lure.
i dont know for billies etc as i dont fish for them
cheers

For your trout when ya
For your trout when ya trolling deep diving lures lick x-wraps and crazy deeps slow it down to around 4-5knots find the lure will dive deeper and stay in the water.

trolling speeds
billies 6-10kn's
mackies, tuna wahoo 6-8kn's but you will still pick them up for billies speeds
good average spped is 6-8kn's but never hurts to experiment to find the right speed (and lure depth) on the day.
for mackies remember as the sun climbs higher drop the depth of the lure.
coral trout etc then if you use deep divers then slow them right down to get maximum depth out of the lure so this could be as slow as couple of knots depending on the type of lure and conditions. Braid genearaly allows them to run deeper.

Really a lot of this is going to be dependant on the type of lure you are trolling. If you are trolling deep diving lures then speed could be difficult.
You want your lures perforimng their thing on the water. Pusher style lures for Marlin will do different things on different days dependant on sea and swell.
Mackies will hit lures at 10 to 15 knots if they are on the surface. You might however be fishing structure down deeper which may mean the style of lure lends to slower speeds.
Coral Trout are ambush species. You want your lure down around their structure in tight so you dont want to be doing 12 knots in the rugged. 5 or 6 more like it.
Theyll hit a lure at 6 knots if you can get close to them. Really its best to jig or cast a plastic or popper to their ambush hole. Much more fun.
Different water conditions and places require different approaches. There is no magic bullet.

Why would the first 5 metres
Why would the first 5 metres off the bottom that cause the most barotrauma?
The greatest pressure change is in the last 5m. Lets use 10m as an example because I'm lazy and the maths are very simple.
Ok, you have a dhufish in 50m and you bring it up to 40m. The pressure change is 6atm to 5atm. The volume change is 1/6th of surface volume to 1/5. Thats 17%.
That same fish is now at 10m and you bring it up to the surface. The pressure change is 2atm to 1àtm. The volume change is 1/2 of the surface volume to 1/1. Thats 200%.
Dhufish are all out of tricks once they're off the bottom and it doesn't matter if you go slow for the last 10m if you winch them for the rest either.
