Have no idea on fishing

Sat, 2008-06-07 19:44

Have no idea on fishing Exmouth but in metro area (and in Jurien as well!) I troll divers like Halco Laser Pro's and Rapala Magnums at 4-8 knots...any faster and they come skittering up out of the water. There are newer divers like Classic F18's and Rapala X-Raps that can be trolled at around 13 knots, and I think the Halco Crazy Deeps can go faster than 10 knots or so as well.

For skirts/feathers, 8-12 knots is my preferred speed, although they can probably go past 15 since they generally run in a straight line with no swimming action of their own, relying on the boat's speed to create bubbles and splashing in order to attract fish. Hope this helps!

It really depends on what you're trolling Russ. Live baits are very effective bridle rigged and trolled at 1-2knts....most bibbed lures run well from 4 - 10knts and skirts a bit faster. Some ultra high speed lures work really well at 20knts plus....which is a great way of fishing when travelling.

Yeh, I generally go 4-6 for divers (depending upon the depths and current)  and 6-9 for skirts.  I just adjust my speed depending upon the conditions and what I 'feel' is going to hookup.

A good speed to start is 6

Sun, 2008-06-08 14:35

A good speed to start is 6 knots (10km). I have fished exmouth heaps in a small centre console and weather has not really hampered our speed. if the weather comes in you may need to vary your speed following or heading into the wind. but no speed is a constant , some times it pays to slow down of speed up. start with 6 knots and then vary if no fish, just as you constantly change lure and lure depth to find fish. as a general rule bibbed lures a little slower than skirts and braid will get you deeper at a slower speed. remember to use a good lenght of leader for braids, i use at least 3 metres of mono on a wind on leader. we have trolled dead slow using halco's 150DD and picked up CT's and makeral in 8-10 meters of water, just get em dowm.....

lure slection could incorporate publishing a book but my first choice is always Halco and yo-yuri

Speed!

Wed, 2008-06-11 16:54

In Exmouth or down here is no different for my setup speeds but with YFT & Mackies i like 6.5 - 8 knots with minno lures and vary your speed as often this will entice them. For marlin & sailfish on pushers i troll at 7.5 - 9 knots and with baits i troll at 5 knots max!

All the best in Exmouth, i'll be up there next week!

stay!

Wed, 2008-06-11 17:11

I'm up there for a 1 1/2 weeks, normally i'd stay longer but i have other commitments down here. Yes i love Exmouth, been going for the past 12 years and with my other boat staying up there i plan to fly up now say 4 times a year!

I'll leave plenty of fish as i normally sportfish and billfish, propbably kill a few reds & spangos for dinner but that's it!

Enjoy yourself Russ, i'm sure you will!
