top 5

Only going off fish I've caught, here is my top 5

1. Yellowfin Tuna
2. Black Marlin
3. Tarpon
4. GT
5. Giant Herring

The first 2 and no.4 are there for the sheer physical pain they put me through, while 3 and 5 just perform beyond expectations and left me with lasting memories of their p o w e r....

Got me having trouble deciding on this one.

1. Marlin
2. Sharks
3. Samsonfish
4. Chinaman
5. Big Trevs/Tuna

Could almost shuffle them in any order, each one brings pain in varying levels. This is just based on what I've caught that is freshest in my mind.

Marlin - never caught one

Wed, 2006-09-06 18:17

Marlin - never caught one but the few ive seen hooked up behind rotto , i dont think much could stop them.

Sambos, well not much else i need to say, but they are damn fun where ever ya go. Small or big they always put up a great fight.

Never caught a big GT to comment on. I will comment on chinamen tho, ive only got a small one before but brenz's fish from exxy last year was a thumper and came up alot quicker than the Golden trevvas we were getting.

Broadbill Swordfish

Wed, 2006-09-06 18:37

A guy I met in The Bay of Islands who chases broadbill swordfish says they are the toughest.....369kg fish on 37kg tackle took 14hrs 20mins....ouch
Aussie record is 175kg...but a pretty rare capture

Striped marlin

Wed, 2006-09-06 18:57

Striped marlin, 115kg, 1hr on 24kg tackle, took 500mtrs line on first run.
42 kg samson fish 1hr on 8kg tackle
12kg albacore 20 min on 10kg tackle
Also yellow fin fight hard.
Yet to catch a GT or broadbill but that will come later.
Alos mako sharks fight hard and dirty as do yellowtail kingfish.
Hard to pick the toughest as it comes down to location. Have heard of 500kg marlin tagged and boated in under an hour on 37kg tackle yet heard of a bloke who fought a marlin about the same size on 37kg for nearly eight hours only to loose it at the boat.

bream

over a short sprint they have some go....but a 2kg tarpon or giant herring would tow a similar sized bream backwards

1. Amberjack 2. BIG trevs

Thu, 2006-09-07 11:30

1. Amberjack
2. BIG trevs (all big ones yet to land, keep getting Owned).
3. Big sharks (as in OWNAGE big, can't stop them) but its hard to judge, as their freakin huge, 3m+. Adrenalin rush though! Again, never landed, but you know what it is, as soon as you see the bow-wave rush away... and if its a mako, some aerial displays ;)
4. Samsonfish
5. um.... I dunno nothing comes to mind. NOT flathead?

Just what I've hooked up to.
Yet to hook onto marlin, the only YFT and southern blues I've hooked onto were tiddlers, but I'm sure bigger ones deserve a mention, Yellowtail kingfish, Dogtooth tuna, and f'in huge cod.

Not many of them available locally =(

I guess you could say, if a fish owns me or spools me on 80lb, its up there ;)

Potato Cod at Exy

Mon, 2007-10-15 11:01

Shot a nice trout off Peak Island, within seconds the Trout was monstered by 5 foot of Potato Cod.   I eventually got my Trout back after a little tug-of-war....but spear and mono was a writeoff.  Funny as and got the adrenelin pumping.

Cheers Pete

After my session with Brad

Mon, 2007-10-15 18:52

After my session with Brad last weekend I would have to say that pound for pound Bluebone are the toughest fish I have encountered. They beat the crap out of any equivalent sized GT.

Here's my new list..

1. Bluebone (black spot tusk fish)
2. Mangrove Jack
3. GT's

After that it's really hard to pick... there are a number of species that are tough but the above 3 stand out the most. Black Jew deserve a mention too.

Hmmmm

Mon, 2007-10-15 23:22

What do you reckon Kasey/Tapout?

My answer is ....

Anything landed from the dropzone using less than 80lb. Extra points if you use a doubleflex rod combo.

Maybe just to be different:

1. Blue Groper (maybe that's what is lurking at the dropzone????)
2. YFT
3. Salmon (stamina)
4. GT
5. Humble Sea Sweep (pound for pound you always think there is something bigger on)

Cheers

Andy Mac

Hi Ya,

That brings back memories. LOL   I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid in Bunbury.  Used to get a lot of them in the estuary across the road from home.

Cheers.
