Got to the Fads

Sat, 2022-04-30 20:25

Conditions poor... but a few dollies landed and a small tuna.

Nothing too good on the bottom...

Slow for most at the ramp I spoke to.

We had lots of action early

Mon, 2022-05-02 15:06

We had lots of action early at the FAD's but it died off quickly. In no small part because of the spearos at every one. Got a few dollies and dropped a big bull before it went quiet.

yeah thats very frustrating when you head all that way, they are on the bite, then get shut down :/ it would be great if they could have a fad specifically for spearfishing. guess if u are spearing them doesnt really matter if they are spooked, but it stuffs it for everyone else!

 Speaking of FADs, I recently

Tue, 2022-05-03 08:38

Speaking of FADs, I recently went fishing with a mate who has a house at Whale Bay, NSW. We went out from Pittwater offshore and to a FAD about 5kms off. Is there any reason the FADs are so far out in WA??

 Interesting question and one

Tue, 2022-05-03 14:58

Interesting question and one I've thought about at times. I know some of the Broome FADs are in 10m to 30m and they work. Mackies get caught in the Sound and behind the 3-mile so they don't mind shallow water. maybe metro it's about also attracting marlin?

FAD depths

Tue, 2022-05-03 16:49

If you went from Pittwater then  you likely went to the FAD that is offshore of Broken Bay. Not sure if it is always in the same place, but there used to be one about 5 miles offshore there, in just over 100m. I think the FADS here west of Rotto are for bigger game fish where the shelf drops off and around the edges of the canyon. Back in 2020 the closest one in was in around 260m depth and just over 50km from Freo. On the Recfish site at that time they showed another group of FADS north, out from the Quinns Rocks area. They  all looked to be in the 110-140 depth range (similar depth to the Sydney one). However the difference was the slope of the seabed  and the distance from the coast, as those northern ones off Quinns were still about 50km offshore versus 8km for Broken Bay to get to similar depth.
