Thoughts and opinions

Dilemma. brands, company names, etc will remain nameless, for now.

A good mate just laid out over $450 for a brand new PE 4-6 overhead jigging rod, as well as $500 overhead reel spooled with PE4 braid, from a well known Perth retailer. Combo with line was just over $1k.

2 days after the purchase, we took the rod out of its cover, cut off the tags, and assembled the reel and rod whilst on the boat at coral bay (over the Anzac weekend). Very first fish, on the very first day, the PE4-6 rod snaps, on a 50cm pinky. I witnessed the snap, and as much as I'd like to be hanging shit on him for it, there was absolutely no high-sticking involved. Bit of a bugger on the first day, but we ended up borrowing another (Smaller / PE2-4) rod for him to use over the next few days.

fast forward to early last week, when he returns the rod to the place of purchase, for them to tell him "they will have to investigate why it's snapped", and get back to him....

This morning they have called to inform him they will not be replacing it under warranty, as it was "load tested in shop", and they "don't know how it was handled after purchase". I believe the "load test" was them pulling on the rod tip, whilst my mate held it. They will however offer him a 30% discount on his next rod purchase in their store....

I know I have snapped a fuck-tonne of high end rods over the years, and unless the rod was 2+ years old, or it was completely my fault, they've been exchanged with almost no questions asked.

id just like a few thoughts and opinions on:

1). Whether the retailer handled this correctly

2). whether you believe this to be a fair outcome

Bit stiff

Mon, 2021-05-03 14:58

With guns like that no wonder the rod snapped ! Haha.. A bit stiff that they are not prepared to go back to the supplier on your mates behalf. I would think that they have to take a bit more of the approach of looking after the customer and would likey see some more busniess in the future but sounds like that wont be likely now.

I would be annoyed as i am sure most would be. Difficult for them to know how the rod was treated, however regardless of this, being only a couple of days old, you would think unless was blatantly obvious that it had been mistreated, then they would replace purley to keep a customer happy and returning. Could also be the manufactuer telling the tackle shop that they will not replace which would put the tackle shop in an awkward position.

BTW - Nice trout.

Mon, 2021-05-03 15:57

I also snapped one within a few days of purchasing and anaconda made me wait 4 weeks until the saltiga rep came around to approve the replacement. I had to chase them but got a credit in the end. The anaconda guys were ok, and said it was the 2 one they had in that week and apparently there was a manufacturing fault in a recent production batch.

it's a tough one as a large fish and a bit of high sticking and boom she's a goner. Bit tough to put it on the manufacturer, but that's the game they are in so they should replace it FOC, at least the first time.

Mon, 2021-05-03 18:28

The fish would have weighed around a kilo. Absolutely no match for a (supposedly) 60lb+ rod....

Rod was in the gimbal, pointed towards the water, and fish was basically being winched up with minimal rod pump.

worst part was I had stopped filming on the GoPro less than a minute before it snapped, once we realised it was just a school of small pinkys!

You're in the construction game and know that claims (similar to insurance) are regularly rejected first time round without sound substantiation.

In the same situation I would go back to the retailer and advise them their offer is unacceptable and requested them to reassess their position.

Manufacturer question

Mon, 2021-05-03 16:51

The retailer needs to at least put the question to the manufacturer, given it seems to have failed in normal use. A mate has broken high end American fly rods in the past, Sage and Loomis I think, and they were replaced no questions asked.

Mon, 2021-05-03 18:49

Had a brand new tcurve barra rod let go on me a couple of years ago and was replaced no issues by tackleworld up here. That one has broken a long way down where all the strength is in the rod. if it was high sticked it would have let go higher up. Push the issue.

Seems common place for retailers to offer that solution

a mate of mine bought same style combo from a site sponsor 5years ago now

I watched him break it no high sticking at all

shop said of you must have high sticked it sorry no return

we never went back and now they are closed anyway but point being that seems to be the get out clause

Not sure what happened there

But Shimano were great as the fault was mine but a brand new Tiagra Ultra was stuffed, not mine and was very happy with the support from Shimano to replace with one at a great price.

Chalk and cheese

Mon, 2021-05-03 19:42

Another mate who was on the same trip had a real seat failure whilst we were up there, on a different brand rod, bought from a different shop, nearly 12 months ago. The reel kept rotating on the rod. He took it back last week....

The retailer is trying hard to locate the same rod (as it was discontinued a few months ago), but failing that has offered him a more expensive rod by the same manufacturer, free of charge.

its service like above, that can drive people to go out of their way to make their purchases, and deter people from going to places with bad repute.

Mon, 2021-05-03 20:13

Just a question Scotto, any chance of damage while being transported up north? My opinion it was a pre stress crack and off it went. Either manufacture fault or damaged in the meantime.

I mean fark me I take my rods to Gnarloo all rigged and ready to go wrapped in towels. Never a failure.

As a goodwill gesture should've been replaced considering the coin spent at the shop. Those clowns wouldn't know what caused it you'd need a forensic engineer to find the fault.

Definitely not

Mon, 2021-05-03 20:22

Rod was in its cover, placed on top of the swags/sleeping bags, in the cabin of the boat. Golden rule: Nothing goes on top of the rods!

id bet my house it wasn't damaged during transport.

the main indicator I see here, was it failed on its first fish, and not even a big one at that.

I'd contact the manufacturer.

Mon, 2021-05-03 22:49

I'd contact the manufacturer. I snapped a T-Curve reversing the rear of the boat into the garage of the holiday house I was at with the rod in the holder still....

I rang Shimano asking to buy a new tip and they rang Tackleworld and organised me a whole new rod at cost price and this was all completely my idiotic fault.

A product should be warranted regardless for a set period. If these rods were half as good as marketed then the manufacturer would never have to replace anything.... As for preloading rods in stores that's a fucking joke. I've had the laughable experience of a " hang onto this and I'll show you how strong it is " to having bits of graphite being picked up from the store floor. Maybe next time they'll take the time to put a reel and some line on it to load it up real world style versus some spotty faced kid grabbing the tip of the rod and having a good old wank with it. My money stayed in my wallet that day!. If you have no joy please name and shame so the store can be avoided at all costs. Behavior like that is why stores are no longer operating. Karmas a bitch people.

Broken rods

Tue, 2021-05-04 08:31

I had the same tihing happen to myself and a good fishing buddy with the same spiral wrapped Shimano pe4 rod 4 weeks apart , hooked a decent Noah and after 5 minutes with only 30 lb line on felt a tearing through the handle, next thing snapped off at the strongest point at the base, took it back to the store and received every excuse under the sun that it must of been my fault, after they had the Shimano rep look at it they told me they would replace it for half retail price, $240, , it was then I felt they were having a lend of me, I started to get my back up a bit and the next thing you know it was replaced free of charge to the latest grappler pe4, my mate didn't have the same luck as he bought his online , I always support local tackle stores as I have been in retail myself for a long time and do believe we both had a faulty product , IMO the rod was replaced by Shimano but the store was trying to squeeze some more cash out of my pocket, have not spent anything there since.

Ive broken to of those T -Curves in exactly the same spot, will never buy another , ive gone back to Daiwa . Re your claim , they shuld be replacing it. The retailer i got mine from wouldnt replace it on the spot and as i was heading out for a fish needed a rod then and there. We ended up with me purchasing another on the spot and about 3 weeks later i was contacted and a credit given to the value of the rod . Wasnt what i went in for but was happy in the end. On another issue had a similar thing happen with my kitchen oven short story , i threatened them with consumer affairs , rang every second day until finally they paid up Moral of the story is be a pest and keep hounding them till you get what you deserve.

I've snapped a couple jig

Thu, 2021-05-06 10:16

I've snapped a couple jig sticks..both sitting in road holder with drag set getting bent back wrong direction by charging fish...one was a PB pinky 90cm which I still landed with 2 eyelets.

I remember a young bloke doing the bend test at Oceanside when Honsu was still working the counter...snapped in his hands, Honsu was like FFS, they replaced that although there is a correct way to do the bend test apparently.

Cant fault Justin at Southside! Always happy to help and pass on some info.

I've got a couple of T-Curves so hopefully I don't have the same issues. One is a Tyrnos for trolling which I've caught mackies and some big Exmouth yellowfin on, and the other is a 24kg Tiagra rod that has never had a marlin on it so no real test yet.
