thinnest diameter 50lb braid

In essence, I need to run as much backing as humanly possible on my 10wt fly reel, so thinner is better!

At the moment it holds about 200yds of 30lb dacron and a 10wt fly line, but as most know dacron is like rope in comparison to braid and I wanna up the poundage and increase the capacity.

So I guess I am looking for the lowest PE rating/highest BS line available. So what else is available beside the spools of gold (Varivas)?

Whiplash

Tue, 2008-12-09 17:24

Have a look at Whiplash which is very thin for its breaking strain, but I have no experience with it. Many of the guys from South Africa use this prodcut extensively

Cheers

Les.

Jigman ultra, not the

Tue, 2008-12-09 17:43

Jigman ultra, not the regular jigman. PE4 is 62lb. (PE4 being 0.33mm). Very nice braid. Regular jigman PE4 is 50lb

Varivas do a big one max power in PE3 at 48lb (0.285mm)

But they are expensive, round, smooth, colour-metered jigging braids (guessing you dont need any of these qualities). Spools of gold as you say (but worth it if its on top of your spool, not underneath, hehe)

I've heard whiplash is very thin (and cheap). Some say its below its rating (perhaps they are comparing to fireline). Comes in 65lb if thats a problem though. They print the diameter on the packet, so you can compare it to the above numbers. Whether you can trust the number is a different story.

Bionic braid is a very commonly used fly backing (perhaps because it has a bit of stretch). Comes in 300, 500, 750 and 1000 yard spools so you'll get a continous length regardless of the amount you can fit on. Their website says its 9lb equiv.

Assuming crappy mono like everyone does, that should make it 0.32mm. So I'd probably go for that. PE5 will be 0.37mm by comparison. Capacity is related to area, not diameter so around 25% more capacity than a standard braid.

Matrix pro is another cheapy thats thin. 50lb is PE4 (0.34mm)

I would go bionic, matrix pro, whiplash in that order of preference

Heard different things about

Tue, 2008-12-09 17:39

Heard different things about the accuracy of its diameter and braking strain rating, so hard to call it. I'm not calling it a crap line by any regard, just possibly inaccurate labeling (I dont know the veracity of that though). E.g. if its really 0.3mm instead of 0.18 and 40lb instead of 50lb, I doubt you'll ever know during use unless you test it. Again, I'm not sure how accurate that call is, i've heard competing arguments, so i'm in the middle about what to think :p

I have 1200 metres of it on

Tue, 2008-12-09 17:45

I have 1200 metres of it on my tld50( 80lb) and never faulted and a further 2 x 600 metres i think 65lb on my spinning reels  and 800 metres on my torque and have put them through absolute hell . not sure of the diameter but moved to whiplash  because of the comparitive thickness and never looked back . It dosen't have flash color's but I'll say that the color hasn't faded either . I have tried suffix and a few others but whiplash hands down

I was thinking bionic

Tue, 2008-12-09 17:50

the pink line will look good against my gold reel Tongue out

But seriously, I have used it before and it was good, but a touch pricey - just a toss up whether to run with 50lb (which has a BS of ~70lb) or 30lb (which has a BS of ~40lb). Or something different altogether.

And I agree with Feral, I run 65lb whiplash on my TLD and its been great.

So thats why fly fishermen

Tue, 2008-12-09 18:16

So thats why fly fishermen like it, lol.

You guys with whiplash, any chance of testing the breaking strain and posting up the results. It would be good to get some actual hard figures instead of second hand heresay. Like I said, only heard it once or twice, so i'm presenting it as a possibility, not a fact :p

I still stick with platil =P

Sunline has a good writeup- A while back (agust?) there was a modern fishing article , they tested about 60 different braids and posted results, i have the magazine sitting around in my room. I specifically remember sunline having a Good breaking strain.

Anyone else have this magazine?

Tue, 2008-12-09 22:31

I use the 65lb whiplash on my staal, and can't break it with a locked drag... And it is very thin line aswell.

Also use the 80lbon another reel and it's fine.

Varivas

Wed, 2008-12-10 13:50

I know you don't want to go there but their Varivas Tuna PE5 is rated at 72 lb so you could possible go down to PE3 which is near 50 lb .

Jigman

Sun, 2009-02-01 18:56

Super fine 8 strand PE braid. Jigman braid is colour coded for the jig fisherman so you know exactly what depth your at all the time. The super slick feel and ultra thin diameter will be a big hit with popper throwers.

Just found this , PE5 is rated 78 lb so it will break well over 50 if pe5 thought of as 50lb braid, with this hi spec braid getting used more and more we will have to start looking at each spool the check the LB breaking strain and not just relying on thinking PE equals 10lb per PE rating.

Like it says you can fill your spool with much more 86lb line if using this line compared to a thicker braid, these superior braids certainly have a lot of factors in their favor only problem is the $$$$$.
