Swell - how does it affect landbased fishing?
Submitted by buschy on Sat, 2010-09-04 16:56
Hi folks,
Just wandering if anyone can explain how swell is likely to affect landbased fishing for species such as tailor and mulloway. Obviously the conditions will change dramatically - but how does this impact whether the fish are on the bite?
Would the stirred up conditions also stir the fish into action as there would be more food on the move and potentially more opportunities to hide and sneak up on prey?
Heading up to Leeman for the week and noticed a huge 5.8m swell forecast for Wednesday (new moon), with the swell being up all week. Tuesday is looking very good for a tailor bash!
Cheers,
Buschy

i wouldnt bother with a 5.8m
i wouldnt bother with a 5.8m swell. depending if your beach or groyne. but generally, i wouldnt risk it landbased in a 5.8. jmo.

Swell will certainly stir up the fish, particularly tailor
But it will really depend on where you are fishing, and which direction the swell is coming from. A 5.8 metre swell would be very dangerous at most spots, and would definately not be worth risking.

Thanks guys
I'm not sure that I trust the report but will check early in the week. No doubt it's a massive swell but the coast there is typically pretty tame - shallow water and fairly well protected by the offshore reef.
There are also options such as a couple of jettys and sheltered bays - but of course I will take the necessary precautions and watch the surf before I even think about throwing a line from the beach.
Speaking of precautions...maybe I could borrow a dinghy so I could go out in the big swell for a snapper bash?

ive always thought a swell
ive always thought a swell of that size is ok its the seas that make the maves on the beach sure it will be bigger than normal but if the seas are up the waves around reefs and sand banks will be only for the surfers take some big lead

you know, just donned on me. 40knot winds and 6m swell are great to fish for snapper in a little tinny in the sound.......according to our dear freind '92..... just make sure you take those "precorshens".. couldnt help myself hahaha
