Yep keeping cobbler out of the swan is illegal, you will get plenty fishing over reefs like trigg though.

Leave the Swan and Canning cobbler

Wed, 2014-04-02 21:05

There is a total ban on the catching and keeping of cobbler caught in the Swan and Canning rivers for the next 7 years I think it is.

I think the ban was due to finish 2017 but not needs to be check

If you go to the recreational fishing brochure online at Fisheries Website and then look Catfish (Cobbler) it states that they are fully protected in Swan and Canning Rivers

Petermac - When I was a young bloke (all that time ago) use to specfiically target them under the narrows bridge of an afternoon early evening on fresh dug bloodworms. Used to get some absolute XOS models from there - Absolute top class fish to eat in my opinion - Cleaning is a challenge unless you know what your doing - Piece of good timber with a 4" bnail driven thru at one end - Turn board over and punch cobbler head down over nail until secure - slit around head and down back with very sharp knife - Grab a good set of pliers and peel skin off from head to tail - beautiful light pinkish flesh - Now fillet flesh whislt still on the nail - Remove carcase and dispose of - Just dont get pricked

Regards

Ozfox has the cleaning method. Try poaching the fillets in salt water they turn out beautiful.

Wading the shallows with a gidgee at night - best when there was a lot of weed in the shallows but that was 25 years ago - hell where has the time gone ???

Thu, 2014-04-03 07:14

Tell me about it. Used to gidgee them too at our old shack at Leeman. Go out just after sunset and get a few , fried up fresh damn they were good. I remember when I was 13 or so I would fish the Narrows and the brewery every weekend. Walking along the forshore I used to see some absolute monster Cobbler (dead). I used to buy my bait from the old fish shop on Barrack st, anyone remember that? The lady alwaysused to give me a few extra river prawns, good old service back then. And I used to talk to an old Polish guy who used to fish the top of the Narrows bridge, he used to have half a dozen hand lines made from Coke cans spread out along the bridge. He showed me some good tips back then. Old Perth memory's

Yep

Thu, 2014-04-03 08:55

My brother and I did exactly the same thing near Whitfords beach that long ago/and more. Pick the right nights, regularly got big numbers and very well sized ones. Was great fun. My old man at that time wouldn't eat anything other than Cobbler, it certainly was worth eating - as above couldnt process them properly with a pair of pliers- well worth the effort.

Edit: for me there the river ones were not even close to the saltys as far as eating went, normal I guess.

Stings

Thu, 2014-04-03 13:00

We used to put the net in at Boggy Bay over the back of Dawseville estaury for mullet (cray bait)

Bloody net always came in full of the buggers

I was about 18 then abd used to get anywhere 6-10 stings a session getting them out of the net

We used to have a bucket of Petrol (believe it or not) and used to put our hands and arms in it and it seemed to neutralise the sting (just had to make sure you didn't have a lit durrie in ya gob at the time)

Cheers

I have been stung once

Thu, 2014-04-03 13:42

getting a school of newborn cobbler out of a prawn net. Must have been about 30 of the tiddlers in there.

Got me a beauty on my index finger, and the barb went in some way as it was wriggling on my finger.

Nothing thought about it initially, but after 10 minutes I felt like cutting my finger off.

No painkillers I could find, not hot water etc made any difference.

Ended up in RPH with a nerve block to stop the pain.

I dont want that ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have the pain from my 7 shoulder dislocations all added up in preference to that.

Parade Hotel

Thu, 2014-04-03 17:27

Used to spear them in the rock wall along the back of the Parade Hotel in Bunbury. Netted them professionally up in the bays of the western side of the estuary off Australind, saw a bloke fall backwards in to a boat full of them and never got a single sting, the look on his face was priceless.

Been stung many times and they still hurt just as much, piss on it until you can get some hot water to flush it with.

Stung by cobbler

Thu, 2014-04-03 19:19

When I got stung on the thumb by a cobbler some time back, I tried the piss on the sting site thing. All that that did was to leave me with a hand smelling like it had been pissed on. Ended up going to Peel hospital for needle to get rid of the pain bloody intense let me tell you.

one of my faves was canning

Fri, 2014-04-04 19:40

one of my faves was canning bridge with a gidgee on the walkway leading to the landing underneath the bridge, used to get monsters there up to around the 4kg mark. another was the causway with fresh bloodworms. the bycatch of 2kg plus blacks went down well. this was when the river was clean where you could actually see the bottom of the river under canning bridge.

best way i found to clean them was to break off the barb with pliers then fillet and skin with a sharp knife

Stopit you guys! Makin me all emotional.

Didnt realise there was a carpark full of cars with kids all having squash and salt n vinegar chips! Lol!

We used to go down to geographe bay at friends beachhouse on hot nights and gidgee cobbler and each others feet occasionally... no footwear to be seen.

Sigh....
