Sugeons dropper knot
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2009-05-06 10:42
Hi guys,
Can anyone guide me to a drawing or picture how to do the surgeons dropper knot - the straight one, not the dropper loop type?
Tired of buying poaternoter rigs at $8 each - would appreciate the help to learn to tie my own...
Thanks

I think surgeons dropper
I think surgeons dropper loop isnt a straight one afaik Dave. There are a few other ones with different names though.
This one is straight: http://www.fishsa.com/kntiesdl.php
Could also try a twisted dropper: http://www.marinews.com/Twisted-Dropper-Loop-436.php
Or this: http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/fishingknots/plat_fishing_knots.html (i'd test it before taking the 94% figure though, as it may depend how you tie it).
Cant say i'm much of a fan of dropper knots though. Much prefer using the three way swivels (two separate swivels joined). I forget the prices and numbers, but the shogun ones work out not too bad. Will still work out much cheaper than buying a made setup, you can rig it how you want, and if you're using bigger baits like whole squids or whole mulies you dont get a twisted mass of line if you dont put them on perfectly straight.

Nope...
The one I am after is a straight peice of line spliced into the leader - looks like about 6 loops around and splices with the main line, so the rig from the top down is - a swivel, a length of leader, a line dropper off the leader, another peice of leader, another line dropper off the leader and a sinker off the end of the leader.
I suppose a swivel will be better for the joins, but the more knots the more place for error...?
Where can I see a standard paternoster rig with swivels?

Ah, I know what you mean,
Ah, I know what you mean, but not the exact knot. Something like this
Perhaps its like a 'surgeons knot' join where you keep the tag long and attach your hooks? (an actual surgeons knot is this, leading to a lot of confusion).
A paternoster with swivels looks like this (though, with two or three more lines coming off instead of the one shown). I'd be alot most trusting of this than a lot of dropper knots. You'll have more knots perhaps, but I use uni knots which are strong and reliable (80%+). Many dropper loops can be quite woeful in their knot strength, so a swivel setup can be more strong/reliable. You can also mix up the line sizes as well. E.g. a light line for the sinker so if it gets snagged you can break off just the sinker, thicker lines for the droppers, or perhaps a smaller, thinner line with a smaller hook as a bycatch dropper. Its even possible to tailor all the knots (using a reliable knot like the uni knot and the right line strength) to break off the rig at places you want (e.g. you could set it to break the whole rig off instead of your mainline, or break off the droppers incase you get snagged). The line will be a lot stronger than the drag you're running, so wont fail in normal use, but if its ever so slightly below your line strength then you can break it off if needed recovering most of your line.
(though, i prefer driftbaiting when bait fishing ;) )

Dropper knot
If you're going to do the dropper knot like in hlokk's link to www.fishsa.com/kntiesdl.php do more than the three twist as demonstrated.Use at least 5-6 and use plenty of spit and muscle to pull it tight.TO hang your hooks on just tie a double knot on your hook trace and use the same knot you would use to link lackey bands together--looks the same as a reef knot.
