Stung by a stonefish?
Was walking in a rock pool at Cleaverville and something spiked me through my boot.
Took the boot off and there was a puncture wound in my middle toe. Pain was steadilly increasing, and luckily had my missus to drive me back to Karratha.
Whilst driving I had thoughts of "am I gonna die" "should I stop and get hot water water out of the radiator" while being crippled with intense pain.
Anyway, started googling stonefish on my phone and did not get much information. Got home and put my foot in an esky of hot water and the pain started to ease.
I rang the hospital and they refused to give me advice, but gave me an emergency information number to call. The emergency hotline were more interested in asking irrelevant questions than giving me advice, and their only suggestion was to visit a hospital within 4 hours.
Anyway, after about an hour in the hot water, another 6 beers and a couple glasses of wine the pain was down to about 20% of the initial pain, so I decided to give up the hot water treatment and cook a BBQ.
Went to bed and woke up the next morning feeling quite normal, just a puncture wound in my toe which hurts when the kids or dog step on it.
So..... was it a stonefish? What else would puncture my reef boots and inflict such chronic pain on me? Is it possible the rubber sole on the reef boots "wiped away" the majority of the poison.
Has anyone stepped on a stonefish or other evil bastard reef creature?

Maybe a catfish spine? Had a catty sitting on the beach one night and I managed to step on it. Spine when through my work boot like it was butter JUST missed the edge of my foot. Would have thought being serrated it would have stayed in your boot though so maybe not..

Might have been a sea urchin?
Might have been a sea urchin? Had their spines go through my glove when shoving my hand in caves after crayfish. Hurt like hell for the first few hours after, but pain was gone by the next day.

My little bloke spent 3 days
My little bloke spent 3 days in hospital after stepping on a stonefish in hedland. Really gave him some grief. Morphine was the only relief.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

hey pale ale
sure it wasnt a dodgy curry from work haha , if you stood on a stone fish you would still be in pain more likely you stood on a catty which is nearlyas bad enough , the worest thing thing that ever got me up north was a cattle tick (oh yea best not metion the muddy that latched on to me) , i thought i was going to loose my leg it was so sore and swollen , for years after the tick bite site used to fester up regularly (back of the knee)

Not sure what type of boots
Not sure what type of boots you had on or what the puncture looked like, but a small stingray might also do it. I got done by one on a jetski and same thing, pain slowly got worse, and the only thing that helped was water as hot as you could stand. But by the next day it was fine.

Matt if that was a stonefish
Matt if that was a stonefish and got you well, ie penetrated the skin and caused some bleeding it would have envenomated you, and you will not ever forget it.
It is extremely painful and also has other effects due to the toxin. Classically the sting site looks blue.
Not underestimating the pain from a catfish, because they hurt like hell to, but suspect you would have ended up in NBH if it was a stony.

I got hit by one diving in
I got hit by one diving in point sampon. looking under a ledge for crays and i basically laid straight on top of it, got me just below right shoulder on the front so i tought it was gonna be hell bad. turned out to be nothing to worry about, hurt pretty bad till i got some hot water on it, then it started to go away, went to the pub that night!! they're really not as bad as people make them out to be so you might be right man, you might have stepped on one!
still wouldnt recommend it though
