Stingray rig?
Submitted by garethgkr on Sat, 2010-01-02 12:56
I'm going to to Woodmans Pt on Monday night. Trying to catch a stingray or something big. What rig do I use? I've got a 12" Surf rod with 25lb mono on it. Just need to to know what sort of hook/sinker rigs needed.
Cheers!

i always get them on
i always get them on mullies. so i say any oily fish is good for them. lol. it's not hard a rig... just let your sinker slide on your main line and then a leader to a swivel at the end of your main line

Same here
Thats pretty much the rig i use.
I go about 50cm of leader material swivel-swivel with a running snap swivel on it for lead (usually with a small 10lb circle to the lead incase of snags) then about 30-50cm leader to 2 snelled 5/0-7/0's.
mainline-----SWIVEL----------------RUNNING SWIVEL(-LEAD)--------SWIVEL--------------HOOK---HOOK
Has not caught me a mulloway but a few rays.

Haha, I saw it on the recent posts thing and thought you were suggesting they were not ellusive... You would have to be pretty talented to say that!

I'll second that.
I'll second that. I caught a monster in Dawseville with 2 big squid flaps on the snelled rig.

Cheers guys for the tips.
Why is it that the sinker must be a running sinker?
Will a Paternoster rig work if I shorten the length of the sinker line?

use running sinker as bait
use running sinker as bait lies on bottom with nothing over it (like main line on paternoster rig)
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Do I put the running sinker
Do I put the running sinker above or below the swivel?
Which one?
A) ---main line-----0-----O------0----J----J
B) ---main line----O---0---------J-----J
0= swivel
O= running sinker.
J= snell hooks.
does it matter how I hook the bait? because it isn't a gang hook.

Woodmans point
South side in the bay. Tons of large rays will just circle there. You can spot them during the day. I used a No4 breakaway sinker (sputnik sinker) clipped to a 200lbs samurai 3way swivel and a 2-3ft 80-100lbs trace to two snelled 7/0 or 9/0 octopus hooks. On the hook goes an octopus tentacle apprx 6-10ins long and 1 to 1.5 ins in diameter.
It isn't as easy to cast as the running sinker, but it stays where you want it. With octo or squid you won't worry abt the pickers. Squid can mask the hook point when it slides down so I prefer octo.

Nope
I don't use wire but I think that's preference. I did lose a few when on 50lbs just when I was gonna land them, so changed to 80-100 and didn't lose any more. The teeth are more like grinders, they're abrasive on the line so if you hook them deep, they'll grind through given enough time. I think the big hooks help.

Nope
Think you're referring to coogee jetty or the ammo jetty which is like the next exit. I'm saying just south of woodman's pt itself (where there's that sculpture on a pole right on the point by the carpark. There's a stretch of beach just before you get there. Or from the "point" with your back to the sea take the right hand side and walk back inland. There's a carpark for like 5 cars on the other side of the "dune" You'll find it's pretty sheltered there too.
Haven't been there in a while. But if it's the same you don't have to cast very far. If you want to lug a big bait out, Use a pulley rig with a breakaway clip. You can cast baits of about a foot with that and it won't snag on the retrieve.
At woodies 50lbs will do but for the bigger ray and when you have to cast further out where there's current, you'll find the trace comes back in pretty bad shape. You might lose a few towards the end when they slowly wear through it and they can take a while to bring in. They are not leader shy so I stick to 80lbs mono - can even be coloured..

You can catch stingrays on just about any rig They are not
fussy unfortunately. Mulies will definately do the job as a bait. Cut up a dozen or so of them into small pieces and throw them in the water gradually and the stingrays will show up.

stingray rig
i used to target them at north mole years ago using a tailor rig which is a big three way swivel, short lead of 30cm to sinker(of the rocks use spoon sinker big enough for conditions) or a star sinker of beach ,a leader of 80lb plus about 60 cm atached to a set of tarpon 4/0 gangs ,using mulies,you catch tailor,sharks on this rig aswell,i used to catch heaps of rays on this rig,good alrounder,if there are sharks about use 150lb plus mono,anyway have fun on your adventure

Off Hillarys Marina on the main wall
near Boy In a Boat reef. I hooked four of the mongrels in a few hours one day.

South Mole is supposed to be a pretty good
stingray hunting spot.

Shovel nose's
There used to be alot of shovel nose rays/sharks aroung the ammo jetty.
Whole yellowtails did the job for bait. We fished them unweighted on a still night but a simple running sinker rig as above would be better.
