Squid sizes lately

The last few weekends I've done a bit of squiding around GI and we've been getting into them but they're all small to medium sized, not one big one to be found. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed the sizes to be small at the moment and any theories on how the squid size varies now and then.

Do the squid give birth during a certain time of the year or just whenever? Seems like there may have been a big birthing a month or 2 ago with all these small ones being around now. Anyone know a lot about the humble squid's life cycle?

Make hay

Wed, 2011-03-23 20:14

Make hay whilst the sun shines Bencort! La Nina is shining, warm water is flowing. Screw the cold water squid, and focus on the warm water pelagics. You can catch your squid every other year.

The squid should be very plentiful this time of year, the bigger ones are around you just have to pick through the smaller ones. Try deeper water or a bigger jig maybe, usually works for me

from what ive read and heard

Wed, 2011-03-23 21:42

from what ive read and heard summer is when the squid spawn so you will be getting the latest little squid from the spawns. but then again winter is also concidered as a spawning time but we still get the big ones i also think it is to do with the water temp. the bigger ones must be out deep or gone else where.

saying that there should still be big squid sitting around some where just need to find them.

as for the water depth any where from 1-10m is the usual but ive got some nice ones in 15m but its hard to work being so deep. try hitting some deeper water in the sound and you will probly find some good sized ones. good luck.

Squid only live for a year at

Thu, 2011-03-24 14:13

Squid only live for a year at most. The longest recorded being 292 Days ! They have several spawning cycles during this time. The link below is mostly from a study of Port Phillip Bay Victoria but they are saying that the bigger squid are taken during spring and early summer as this is when they are closer to the end of their life cyle after spawning. This would explain why there are bigger numbers of small squid around now in autumn.

Goodzster, the bay areas produce small to medium squids in general and stepping outside to more oceanic areas and deeper water "generaly" gets the bigger ones. I'm more L/B but Ryan normally goes to the Windmills & out from Swanbourne for the bigger squids but dont tell him i told you lol.

Spawning!

Sat, 2011-03-26 08:44

Goodz,

yes there was at least two squid spawning event that I saw a few months ago. They were 4 weeks apart suggesting tide/moon phase deal. I've been seeing three distinct size groups of squid. Same with the Tailor. May have the same event to predate on the baby squitla as they grow. I reckon a bumper year on both in winter.
