South Australia fishing advice.

Looking for advice on fishing in South Australia. I leave for Melbourne next week to pick up my new boat and I have a mate flying over on Sunday week to meet me in Melbourne to help with the drive back. We were planning to do some fishing on the way back for 3 to 4 days around Coffin Bay, Streaky Bay, Ceduna, Port Lincoln area. Any advice that people are prepared to share about fishing these waters in South Australia would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Whyalla

I know there's some good Pink Snapper fishing at Whyalla, but I think the best time might be a bit later in March/April.

Howdy,

Just got back from a work trip - no fishing :-(

Streaky isn't doing overly well ATM  - Smoky Bay - Ceduna area fairing much better, some snapper at Whyalla as well but will get better coming into easter.

Few whiting (farm beach), snapper and nanny's (reef head area) off coffin bay - tuna etc out wide when conditions allow.

Will send you some info I have sent to other members when I can locate it.

How big's your tub? -  if weather is good when your coming through Adelaide area and your keen could take you out for some bluefin tuna fishing south of Cape Jervis (wind will be the big IF)- getting them anywhere from 15 up to 30kg+ (and my mates boat is in the shop ).

Cheers Paul.

I actually sent you a PM yesterday as I saw that you posted some info on a previous forum. Unfortunately I wouldn't head down to Cape Jervis as I wanted to make my way more into central SA to keep on track towards Perth. I'm picking up a Barcrusher 6.8m Hardtop so I think that would do the job?

Cheers, Kuzi.

I was actually planning on heading down thru Port Lincoln and staying in Coffin Bay then making our way up towards Ceduna then across to Perth. Coffin Bay was definitely on the hit list.

Tuna and Nannies

Sat, 2015-02-14 21:25

My parents live in Coffin Bay and the Tuna and Nannies are going off at the moment. The wind is making it hard but when you can get out it is well worth it. The old man said they are heading out to Sir Isaacs Island area and cleaning up each time. They hand 45 degrees there today so be prepared for some heat.

How far out do you need to go to get the Nannies? Is that near or around Sir Isaacs Island area?

Nanny's would be anywhere out

Sun, 2015-02-15 13:02

Nanny's would be anywhere out from Pt Sir Isaacs (no Island there) down south to reef point (sometimes called reef head) and beyond.  will get some offshore from Coles point too

tuna start looking anywhere from Pt Sir Isaacs to Greenly/Rocky island but usually have to get at least 3/4 of the way to Greenly before you can consider putting out lures unless your seeing bust ups

greenly island is a fair distance so keep weather/petrol in mind - some rough water out there when it blows up.

Be aware there are two rocky Islands too - the one referred to most is the one south of Greenly (there is another north of Coles point)

How far out are we talking from Pt Sir Isaacs? What sort of depths? I have a 300 litre fuel tank in the boat.

Sun, 2015-02-15 20:47

22 miles to Greenly (sorry got mixed up with names) which is the biggest island you can see. Old man reckons ground more to the west is seeing better results. As far as tuna goes follow the crowds.

Depths for the

Tue, 2015-02-17 10:40

Depths for the nannies/snapper - 30-40m line out from Sir Isaacs and reef point (or coles for that matter), further out towards greenly you'll see some depth variances on the charts these are worth hitting.

Sometimes a few boats out for tuna but not always - look for the birds. if no birds about start trolling just prior to greenly (at lumps close to Greenly) then head to rocky go around it - you'll see some lumps in between and a large shelf on the far (southern/western side of Rocky) troll around these and the dropoff for the large shelf (PS watch out for the rock on the western side of Rocky - should be on charts)

Point Sir Isaacs is around 39km from the ramp It's another 45km from Pt Sir Isaacs to Greenly Island (around 84km total).

Go to Navionics link below for the charts - scroll mouse to zoom

Thanks mate

Much appreciated all the info Paul. Feel free to pm me any other points/marks if you manage to stumble across it. I think that we will just head straight to Coffin Bay and spend 3 days fishing out of there unless you suggest otherwise.

Tue, 2015-02-17 10:50

Am I reading and seeing this correct but is there only one possible boat ramp to use inside Coffin Bay with a long distance to travel to get out into the deeper water near Sir Isaacs point?

One concrete ramp in the coffin bay township.  Often has a strong side current but otherwise calm and a good ramp, washdown taps, cleaning station etc.

Beach launch at Farm beach and a couple of other spots is the only other option, we have always used the ramp (8m cat).  Need to follow the channel markers (as per charts) out of the bay unless you know the area last thing you want is to hit an oyster lease etc.

approximately 39 km to Pt Sir Isaacs from the ramp following the channel.  Ideally you'd be looking at 50km one way to go for nanny's and another 30 after that for tuna (plus trolling).

Farm beach is a lot closer - zoom in on the Navionics chart and you will see the areas mentioned.

Thanks for all the info Paul. I think I will give the beach launch a miss and stick with the ramp. I'll let you know how we go.

Might pay to do that this

Wed, 2015-02-18 07:02

Might pay to do that this time of year all beach launches (really only farm beach but the Ab boys have a few other spots they use at times), face west so cop the aft sea breeze - launch would be ok but coming back anytime after lunch might have a problem
