Shimano TLD 50 LRS Two Speed

Looking for some advice - just picked up one of these and I'm in two minds as to what I line I want to use. I want to fish standup 37kg class with it, but I'm undecided on mono with a wind on leader or braid with a wind on leader. The outfit will need to be versatile....live baiting/cubing for kingfish/yellowfin, trolling for wahoo/dogtooth and occasionally billfish......

Id go the braid with a good 10m wind on for stretch. But its a hard one when you want to troll that class as well, i always find it hard to do 2 things with 1 reel.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

My 50 I have 15kg mono on and a hell of a lot of it. Still able to knock over a 50ish kg marlin in less than half an hour and even if a big one grabs it you've got well over 1km of line for the chase. I have 8-10m of double, then 8-10m of 200lb wind on, 400lb clip to the lure leader which is generally 200lb or 400lb for big skirts. I've never been busted off and landed a few solid fish. I also like it for free floating baits as the fish doesn't know its hooked with the mono stretch in the current. Depends if you like the sensitivity when free floating to set the hooks, or if you like lifting on them when you feel the weight go on.

As SPESS said it is hard to do two things with one reel. I would probably go with mono if you are going to do a fair bit of trolling with it.

Mono really is the only way to fly when trolling IMO, I have just converted my 6/0 senator into a 24kg mono trolling setup and would not go back to trolling with braid. With the stretch and give you get with mono - you will land a lot more fish. Also if a rampant fish decides to cross all the lines over each other in your spread and your using braid - say byebye to all the other lures attached with mono - braid will slice straight through any mono.

Cheers

Thanks...I want to fish 80 because of the area and dirty tactics of the species I will generally target, and the distinct chance of hooking a 200kg+ marlin....the old story of coming to a gunfight with a knife..
I think I'll try both and see which one I prefer....must get 37kg stand up rod....

If you want to try and get a bit more line on i have heard of guys running dacron as backing and putting 100-150mtrs of topshot mono. Alot of guys doing this with good success.

As fo running braid as there is no stretch in the line if you do hook a good fish and he wants to go to China in a hurry the chances of pulling the hooks or popping the line are greater.

If you can, get hold of a 50W or go for an 80.

By the way 24kg line will land most marlin up to 200kg if played right.

ive done similar to what boutime is talking about .on a pen inter 30 .about 700m of 50lb braid top shotted with 100m of 60lb pen 10 x .i cant say if its any good as ive yet to get anything over 10 kg on it but still have the advantage of stretch and 800 odd metres of line to play with

always in it just the depth that varies

I use a T50W and it holds 750yds of 130lb Izorline with a 120/150yds of 80lb IGFA mono topshot and 26/28feet of 200lb wind-on-leader (made from the thicker longline mono).
Its permanently bolted to a AFTCO short curved butt on an Ugly Stik White Tiger 50/130 stand-up.
Awesome set-up and capable of pulling the plug outa the pond!
