shark fishing

Just seeing if anyone can help me with a question. A old bloke earlier in the year told me if you want to catch sharks to use cat food. Just wondering if anyone knows if this works and if its legal for starters? It wont be on a metro beach but south. Be happy to get 1 to freeze all others will be thrown back. Any help would be gre3at boys. Cheers

I think you will find the old boy meant to use catfood as berley rather than bait. Punch a few holes in the tin & attach it to a length of cord or just put a few tins worth into a berley cage & your away. IME the best way to use catfood as berley is to stuff as much as you can into a berley cage/bucket & then freeze the whole lot solid. Once it goes into the water it will defrost slowly giving you a decent trail for several hours. Doesn't hurt to cube up some mulies & throw a handfull of those in every now & again to add that little bit extra to the trail. Standard baits are tuna, mullet, tailor etc, live if possible, fresh if not, frozen as a last resort.

Spend your time finding a good location. Look for the deepest water possible, the spot I usual fish gets 2 sharks a night on average where as when weather allows the deeper spots produce up to 6 runs a night, as for baits whole fish are best and try to avoid cutting them up because rays seem to have a go at cut baits more than whole fish.

Hope this helps, good luck
