Shark attack suspected at Wylie Bay, Esperance

Shark attack suspected at Wylie Bay, Esperance, on WA's south coast where surfer is missing

hope to hell this ends well and they find the bloke ok soon , as it is not looking good at present ,

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-09/shark-attack-in-esperance-wa-reported/12748378

there is also a whale carcass washing ashore south of bunbury at peppy beach with some big nasties eating off it over the last 24 hours
so advice is to stay clear of that area if diving or kayaking etc

can never be carefull enough nowdays if your in the water on the west coast ,, imo

dam things are certainly not dwindling in numbers and i still dont buy the ''they only bite to suss humans out '' theory at all

we are mammals , and therefore trigger their attack reflex in how they sense us when we are in their domain

love to see cage diving banned ,but that wont happen anytime soon either

A few questions

Fri, 2020-10-09 22:09

From the tv news reports it appears that the surfer has been taken, condolences to his family and all close to him.
The news (ch 7) said that a witness saw a dorsal fin of truly epic size quote "a metre high" and the victim was thrown into the air.
Now a metre high dorsal fin is one hell of a dorsal fin, yes in time of great stress things can be see out of all proportion to reality, and that phenomenon is not unusual.
The victim is also reported to have be thrown up out of the water.
I'm not trying to start any speculation however, there is one species of sea animal that does have characteristics that could be matched to the description given that is not a great white shark. When the surf board is recovered (and I hope it is) it will be interesting to see just what teeth marks are left on the board.
An open mind must be kept on what has caused this tragedy until all the evidence is collected.

i dont think orcas have ever been known to kill humans

their hunting techniques are taught by the matriach to the clan and past down this way ,through the pods generations ,, hence why not all pods use the same hunting methods and some are very unique

there are some huge whites out there though ,,at close quarters it would look massive

sad another life lost

A 5+ mtr White would have a dorsal fin that would seem a metre high!!

I've spoken to an old boy at streaky bay who used to chase B grade waves to surf with less crowds, often alone, he recalls seeing a metre high dorsal come around the corner at a break he was surfing alone... The wildlife in the area knew straight away, he said a seal pup tried to get on his board as he was paddling for the reef that hugs the little point... He even said Dolphins put themselves on the reef shelf where they were safe but could still see what was going on keeping their heads under the water... An image I'll never forget as he explained to me in detail... This guy has had other altercations but this one scared the shit out of him the shear size of the dorsal coming around the point...

Kelp beds at Esperance is a hot spot now, this is the third white attack that I know of there...

Sat, 2020-10-10 19:39

Mate was freediving in 60 foot of water at Darwin reef up from Turtle Bay about 6-7 months back, just reached the bottom when 2 big black shapes went flashing past, quick trip back to the surface and pod of killer whales cruising around the boat.

To suggest that the shark involved in the attack at Esperance could have been something other than a big great white. My suggestion was based on the description of the attack given in the paper.
Yep open minded ,looking at all possibilities based on the information available at the time, how foolish of me.

I dont think Meg was wrong at all, just stating what he thought. Anythings possible theres no rules in nature, starving sick orca on it last legs(?) is not going to pass an easy meal.

I was surfing at rocky point many years ago and my brother and I saw a huge shadow come round the point and then straight past us, we thought it was a whale, but while reminiscing years later we thought shit, the beast didnt surface once and it was about 5m long.

Sucks to hear of another attack, lets hope the next one is a long way off.

Stop and Think

Tue, 2020-10-13 12:55

I may be a recreational diver, a spearfisherman and an ordinary fisho but I’m above all a conservationist. I want our kids and their kids to experience some semblance of nature that hasn’t been altered by nature. Anyone who has watched the recent Richard Attenborough doco or is even remotely aware of what we are doing to this planet and everything that lives on it would be shaking their heads at some of the comments on here.

The drum lines, the netting, the culling and all the other ridiculous measures to “control” or “manage” an amazing apex species like the Great White just epitomises just how arrogant and destructive us humans are. We’re talking a species that travels thousands of Kilometres. Yes they have been known to frequent certain spots but in general they travel and travel far and wide. 27 shark attack deaths in 120 years. How many deaths per annum because of people on their phones in cars or D.U.I ? Can we cull those retards too ?

Do we head out to these spots right now and kill the 1st White that comes along ? Will it be the White that killed the fella – probably not… but who gives a fuck. Let’s just kill one or two and make certain people feel better.

I personally don’t know of a diver or surfer amongst my friends and friends of friends who would advocate culling Great Whites. Not a single one. Why ? Because every single one of us are mature and intelligent enough to accept that what we love to do carries a level of risk with it that may, just may, in its extreme see us lose our lives. That’s the REALITY of what we do. The choice is always ours…

Karen Milligan, partner of Diver Gary Johnson’s who was taken late last year in Esperance:

"WE WERE ALWAYS AWARE OF THE RISKS, AND OFTEN TOLD EACH OTHER THAT IF WE WERE ATTACKED BY A SHARK, THAT WOULD JUST BE UNLUCKY.

WE WERE COMPLETELY AGAINST SHARK CULLING, AND I STILL AM".

Every diver and surfer who enters the water in a remote location knows the risks involved and it's always sad to see anyone get taken. As we know you can mitigate with shark shields and the like. But in my opinion if a shark is menacing a swimming area then it or any shark in the area must be taken out. As Hezzy has mentioned I reckon cage diving has a lot to answer for, there something to said teasing a beast like that with human form.

As for culling my opinion is as I've said before there should be a quota set each year for big whites and Tigers with a mix of commercial and recreational take, why not we all fish here and the balance is upset as it is.

But it will never happen with the green uproar.

Shall I warm the pocorn?

Ever considered? You think I sit here just to write glib comments. My  reasoning is that fishing to a quota would ensure that there are numbers there still to breed and be a viable species.

Apparently Dhuies were endangered at one stage and I can see why with the numbers taken in years gone by, but with good management the stocks are becoming stable again.

Same as with Crays etc.

Pulling a few hundred inshore Whites and Tigers isn't going to bring them to extiction, that's my amatuer opinion. It could be managed with zones so the deeper water fish are left alone.

Like I said it's all pie in the sky, the greens won't have a bar of it.

To there own thoughts good read . Guys friend on news other night . His statement ( if it was a dog . It would have been put down) what is the difference?. Do you agree with dogs protecting there property’s or handlers getting put down ? Crocs same same . Any white cruising shoreline . Should be caught /tagged or shot . ( only my opinion) . How long is it now 3.5 generations of being protected . Not saying kill them all . Anything cruising shoreline has only bad intentions . How many have been tagged in Cockburn alone in last 3 years ? Big female white gave birth last year inside of Carnac island. I think figures would be very high. How many tagged ones are constantly monitored. Or seen again. Enter there domain ect ect. Heard it all before. Do you expect to jump in car and get injured or killed ?

"Anything cruising shoreline has only bad intentions "  riiight...  So basically doing what they naturally do eh.  You are aware that following many years of studying Whites they realised that they spent a great deal of time in the shallows.

Or should I state "our" shallows... you know, human territory.

What if we do indeed have a quota on kills or "culls" and we still get a death. Do we increase the quota ?.............

There's been a heap actually Andy. There are plenty that don't make the news.

There's been a tagged shark or sharks pinging the monitors at Cott, North Cott and GI recently. The Cott ones have been like 4am or after 7pm so not when people are in the water generally. The GI one was late morning but again probably no-one in the water. Let's hope that they keep to darkness hours or don't like the look of humans as prey.

I cant even really be fucked giving you my opinion because you are delusional and your opinion wont be altered...

There is no real way of knowing the white numbers for obvious reasons but if the population has increased like it seemingly has ( a white breached yesterday at the back of margs ) then the snapshot of the last 15 years of a shitload of people dying will continue and only head in 1 direction...

Start culling the fuckers and the whales and get some balance back...

I dont wish you to die but I hope a white pointer grabs you next time your diving by the head and chews your brains out...

im fully supportive of your opinions, I’ve been in and around the ocean for all my life (all 58 years of it) diving, surfing fishing and have not had an encounter with a shark where I felt threatened. I and all my family are aware of the risk of me getting taken by a shark and to be honest I’ve got more chance of winning lotto.

Ignorance

Mon, 2020-12-07 15:44

Ignorance can go both ways depending on what your views are,

Firstly I am saddened to think another human has (or may have) been taken as I am sure everyone on this page is,

However I also think that we all need to respect each others views and opinions and more so in sad times as this.

I am not sure how educated you need to be to be a fisherman, but I am certain we are all educated enough to have an opinion, so to say people are uneducated because they have differing views is definately ignorant.

What a shit place we would all be in if we all believed the same thing, followed the same thing did the same thing etc etc etc, but thankfully that is not the case.

I say each to his (or her) own, you may not like it but at least respect it.

Calling people retards and shit does bother me a bit and isnt the way to have a civil discussion about a topic you obviously are passionate about. Ive weighed in on the shark debate many times over the years on here and you are not someone I could talk to about it. Why post on the forum the way you are if you dont want to change minds? just thought id end on a question, its always good to answer with questions hey.  Take a chill pill

 The thing that baffles me

Wed, 2020-10-14 09:57

The thing that baffles me with blokes like Pesc and Merman is why the love for the white?

It is estimated that somewhere between 100-250+million sharks are killed each year!!!

It makes no sense to me that these guys have such love and affection for the white...

Using the whole apex preditor ocean imbalance argument is total crap, there aint no shortage of sharks in Australian waters to do the job old whitey does...

I also totally agree and have said all along its bullshit cage diving is allowed!! A few families profiteering from a business that potentially alters the bahaviour of dangerous wild animals...

Species are put on the protected list for a number of reasons normally determined by people far far more expert in the fields of biology, environmental science/management and conservation.

 Don't you think there are

Wed, 2020-10-14 11:52

Don't you think there are plenty ( and if i had the opportunity I would also ) expressing their opinions that something in the ocean has changed in the last 20 years to the rule makers wanting something done about it...

You were quick to point out that 27 in 120 years to make your point sound stronger but even a bloke like your self knows that going waaaay back then is not really relevant.... That is a death every 4.5 years...

Or you can look at a snapshot of the last ten years - 24 deaths that is an average of yes thats right 2.4 per year.....

That is an increase of over 1000% if my maths serves me correctly

So you tell me why Pesc, whats going on? And dont give me the whole the ocean is fished out wank, there are more whales and seals than ever before in my lifetime...

If that rate continues to increase at even half that for the next 10 years we'll certainly be seeing 15-20 deaths here in the west during that time...

At what point do you recognise its a problem that needs to be rectified?

We dont need scientists to tell us they might need to be protected, its fucking obvious by the numbers of deaths isn't it alone??

Do you want a reunion island scenario, no surfing, no diving... Then what??
