travacalm

Tue, 2013-05-14 18:32

is the best but has to be taken as PT said about 1/2 hour before you go.nothing works once you are allready sea sick.also sipping on a couple of beers or bourbons through the day.

not a lot, just 2 or 3 threw the day i find helps settle the equilibrium.

Found a good technique.

Tue, 2013-05-14 19:04

Hey mate,

I feel ya pain it's got to be the worst feeling nothing you can do about it once it has set in.

I used to use kwells but still got sick in big swells. I now only use Travacalm original, farke that natural shiz doesnt do a thing! The originals are in a box with green writing, natural (which again are useless) have orange writing on box.

Take 1 tablet just before you go to sleep. Wake up in the morning have breaky preferrably something like toast and water. Avoid orange juice etc acidity upsets stomach and will leave you behind from the get go.

Depending on how bad you get it have 1-2 (i always have 2 for security) 1/2 hour before you will set foot on the boat. I will follow up with 1 ablet every 2 hours.

This technique has worked a treat for me. Even cubing south coast NSW for YFT/BFT in 5 meter swells 30 mile out.. That was wild!

Good luck mate hopefully they invent a permanent cure soon i'd pay good money!!

It only took 16 yrs .Bloody deckhands used to open my lunch box before the boat had left the marina because they wanted to know what I brought them for lunch as they knew I wastnt going to eat it.

If your local pharmacy has

Tue, 2013-05-14 19:08

If your local pharmacy has travalcalm original and travalcalm natural i'd grab a box of both, the original has 3 thing, Hyoscine, dimenhydrinate and the caffeine mentioned before and the "natural" are just ginger tabs. Most people ive given the original to seem to like it more than the Kwells because its less sedating.

Im a pharmacist btw lol you can probably tell =D

Sorry to hijack this thread

Just wondering, I always take seasick tablets before I head out, haven't been sick for years( touchwood).but I used to get sick badly even with tablets. But I've taken my nephews and my kids out on the boat quite often( aged between 6-10). They never seem to get sick.

a few blokes here seem to take kids out, do they get sick?

Yeah kids

Tue, 2013-05-14 19:57

Yeah , taken a few of my mates kids out to the D9 for allnighters and they love it, even go to sleep in the cabin watching a DVD.

I only get sea sick on realy calm days ( don't know why ) or if i try to sleep on the boat .

My prevention is simple . Drink premixed Bourbon as soon as i can .The rule on my boat is you cant crack a can until you catch a fish, so i always stop on a wrasse spot , get a few for fresh bait, crack a can and head of to my fishing grounds . lol .

No Milk

Tue, 2013-05-14 19:50

Stay right away milk , it curdles everything in your stomach and up she comes.
Ginger works a treat, bikkies, raw ginger lumps etc.
No piss the night before or fizzy drinks etc during the day.

If all else fails, eat pineapple, the ring slices are best so that its in bigger chunks when you bring it up and its still going to taste the same 24 hours later

Tue, 2013-05-14 20:45

Another thing I heard, from an old bird that said her son or nephew or something was in the navy, is to strap your big toe to the toe next to it, on both feet. "the navy can't spend a fortune on sea-sick tablets" she says, "they figured this stuff out decades ago."

Haven't tried it yet myself, wouldn't want to find out the hard way if it don't work!

White spot

Tue, 2013-05-14 20:49

If you have a look at our suntanned sailors, take note of the un tanned spot just behind their ears, they still issue the stick on Skops seasickness patches that are good for 2-3 days, when one is nearing the end of its usefulness they stick one behind the ear on the other side of their noggins

Myths

Wed, 2013-05-15 07:45

Sorry, I was in the Navy for 12 years, the 1st 3 or 4 of which I was chronic sea sick and was never issued patches or told to tape my toes together. Bought Quells myself once but didn't work. Decided to tough it out and these days dont get sick at all. I was always told it's mind over matter.

My wife gets crook and Travel clam original works for her but reckons by the time we are coming home she feels half dead (tired), too much caffiene???

Ha ha reminds of my bro who was in for seven years. He said the same thing, just tough it out and you usually come good. He did a trip trip down to Albany for ANZAC day once ironically on the HMAS ANZAC and reckons the first three days all the decks were covered in spew it was that rough. Reckons evryone was crook and the smell made it worse. Personally for me Kwells work really well had two travel calms once and was like a spaceman for the whole day. Everyone's different.

Guaranteed fix.

Slip your finger in your bum and rub it under your fishing companion's nose when he is getting green and watch the chuck sprinkler unload.

You will laugh so hard there is just no chance of chucking yourself. If you are a prude and cant handle a bit of turd drop a bit of bait in your fellow fishing mates drink and just wait until it hits his mouth and watch the fun. Baker gut cavities work a treat but the more rotten it is the better.

Milk works quicker

Wed, 2013-05-15 14:38

Giving them a drink of milk to settle their stomach works quickest of all, By the time it takes to get down all the contents are on the way up.

Picked a new decky up at Exmouth and asked if he gets sea sick because there was no way I was bringing him back. Took him 5 days to come good. Sip of water then wait 5 minutes then up it would come and all while wearing full wet weather gear in 40deg + heat because the line was coming up covered in jellyfish stingers.

Tue, 2013-05-14 23:03

i look at the horizon as often as possible when i'm offshore, dont know why but seems to work for me, i make everyone that comes on my boat take a travacalm at the ramp (it's non drowsy unlike kwells). got 1 mate who refuses to take it and he's always the one that creates the burley trail (he always blames it on the drinks he had the night before). i've heard the quick swim trick works well but haven't needed to try it yet.

Give up fishing....go play

Give up fishing....go play golf

In all honesty one key thing is make sure you have something small to eat before you go out, no milk or very little, no greasy food. Usually a piece of toast and a black tea.

Looking at the horizon works if your starting to feel a little green, but not to the point of throwing up.

Sea sickness tablets do work, but most make you Tired.

No booze the night before helps as well.

Other than that, its just time on the ocean, you get used to how a boat moves and bounces and will get used to it.

I'm surprised nobody has

Wed, 2013-05-15 17:11

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but a while back I decided I was out on the boat too often to be taking kwells 'just in case', so decided I'd just tough it out with nothing unless I'm really hung over or nightfishing.

I now almost never get sick, but the cure for when I do feel rough, is as soon as I start feeling a bit queezy, I drink 2 beers reasonably quickly. For me it works every time, but everyone who gets sick on my boat acts like I'm crazy when I try to feed them beer while they are crook (maybe I am crazy, but it works)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Beer!

I used to be a chucker when i was younger.  After reading in a magazine about having a couple beers, I started to have a few and it works.  Maybe the alcohol gives you confidence or it messes with your balance.  Dunno but it definately works for me.  Last billfish shootout, I was not up to having my early morning beer at 4:30 am.  Big mistake.  I found myself spewing all day as i didn't drink my beer.
