Sailfish taken by sharks

vimeo.com/133897458

We had hooked a sail, and were getting close to bringing him boatside for release. Things were a bit complicated as he had done a good job of knitting as he charged through the pattern-at one stage he had both baits, the long skirt and the teaser all involved. With only two on board, it took a bit to get it under control, and we ended up with it hooked on one bait and dragging the long skirt behind. Then disaster strikes-- a pack of whalers arrive. I have never lost a sail to sharks before, thought we were immune, but these bastards were something else. You can see the smaller (2.5 m) ones circling as the big ones get into it. Then one rams the outboard. I literally felt sick. WARNING--no expletives deleted.

cunse of things!

I heard Andrew Roland on Karl Langdon's 882 programme on saturday morning, saying they have started working with fisheries WA to look at options to start reducing shark numbers in the north west.

he said they've both noticed a massive increase in numbers since the ban that started in (I think he said) 2007, which was more of an "incredible recovery rate" of the sharks numbers. I personally never witnessed any decline in their numbers!!

either way, I think it means they'll be opening the fishery again, or at the very least, removing the ban.

No question the initial research was flawed.

Mon, 2015-07-20 11:48

Tangles, remember when we did that pre-season breeding stock survey for Fisheries? The researcher was gobsmacked by the number and size of sharks we accumulated within a few days of not moving the pots far each day. And this was when they were first spruiking "these things are endangered" line. We were telling them they were looking in the wrong places. Wish i could find that video we took, where one tried to eat the camera  That was Noeleen driving, Connor had been and gone earlier in the trip.

They had him before I had a chance to free spool, anyway we try that a lot with mackerel and it doesnt work very often.

No, they weren't thickskins--they are generally a smaller shark, quite distinctive with their large dorsals and wide pectorals, I do have them on video from a previous trip. These were bronze whalers, about as big as they get. 3 metres or more at a guess.

Sharks are really ruining the place, and I blame both the ban and the sanctuary zones. The zones mean fishing is more concentrated, and the sound of an outboard is like ringing the dinner bell. It is very noticeable that, if you have a spot very close to a boundary, and a long way from where everyone else fishes, sharks are just not an issue. Little blacktips up to 1.4 metres can be good fun, as they behave rather like a mackerel. Any bigger and they are just hard work. Oceanic White Tips are just plain scary, very aggressive will chase released mackerel around leaping clear of the water like a great white--and we are talking a 3 metre shark. I know a bloke up there, good experienced fisherman working from a dinghy, he gave up on trolling this year after losing 8 mackerel/wahoo and associated lures on the trot. I kept him fed with fish by giving him some of the half-shares we were sometimes getting back.

And don't get me started on Potato Cod fish thieving bastards.

I'm doing up a video of the whole trip, probably post it tomorrow.

That's a bloody scary situation, 1 of those sharks would IMO have to be close 3 1/2 metres going on the size it presents on the video. Lucky you didn't have a transducer bitten of the back of the boat, assuming you have one fixed to the transom.

transducers?

Tue, 2015-07-21 08:17

He could've bitten off the 83/200 CHIRP off the back and I would have said good riddance  useless POS. But that's another story. I agree with the size guess, I reckon the biggest were 3.5 metres. The sobering part is that that stretch of water actually hasa lot  more dinghy fisherman trolling it that larger boats--the South Lefroy mob nearly all fish from 12 foot tinnies and they work that area in droves when they aren't out bottom bashing in 100 metres. A shunt like that on the back of a 12 footer could see two blokes in the water in the midst of that carnage.

Anyone on here know anyone camping fishing along there? Pass this on.

Now you have started the transducer story I think you need to finish it.   Unhappy with the quality of returns. I made the mistake of mounting it low on the vee, when i was going to be operating a lot off a beach, so it got pushed around and all the pathetic little fiddly mounted bits were destroyed, but even when it was aligned properly, returns were weak. Put the gain up a bit, blank  out with noise. In desperation, connected the old xducer up--belonged to an LC-95 MT (? must check name) 90's Lowrance LCD Monochrome jobbie which came with the boat. This actually gave a very good picture, but I needed an upgradeable GPS with downloadable marks so I bought an Elite-7 HDI. The old trannie gave a much stronger picture ( selected generic 83/200 in Installation) but lost downscan ( no loss, IMO) and temp. The whole plot is much sturdier as well.

Someone on Ausfish suggested I look at an American forum, dissatisfaction with standard supplied xducers is rife, much better options available.

Saw some massive whalers last night giving the fishos a hard time up here at Groote Eylandt last night. Got to a stage where you had to give up as you couldn't land a thing, even the kids fishing 200lb sash cords couldn't get their fish in quick enough.
