Right, time to get a proper trolling overhead

I have been using my fathers TLD 20 and 25 and a TICA reel I dont trust fully for the trolling up here around karratha. Looking to get 2 new reels for trolling and possible deeper bounching. Budget about $500 each. Prefer Alutechnos but nothing off that quality near this range some the best Shimanos will probably have to do.

I have my ideas but wonder what the experts think. Mostly for Macks, Tuna and the odd billie should the stray into the pattern!!

cheers

In mid October Bones 76 was selling a Tiagra 16 in good condition for $450.  Not sure if it sold.

No idea what reel to get, but do you know what line class you want to run on it (might narrow some options down).

10kg is pretty standard here

Tue, 2009-12-08 16:44

10kg is pretty standard here for all purpose trolling, will knock over anything that you're likely to encounter, macks, tuna, sails etc... I'd only bump up to 15kg if there was a chance you might come across some small blacks but that doesn't happen often unless you're targeting them.

Was thinking of running 10pl on the smaller and 15 on the bigger rig, then next upgrade the rods to Alutechnos rods,

Will safe the TICA and TLD 20 for light trout slow trolls with long Vanish leaders and some shallw divers. TLD 25 will act as the shotgun rig with pusher or Popper back in the spread.

Want a lever rather than star drag.

Hope this helps/

cheers

Neels,

I run 2 tdl 25 and a 50 2 speed on 24 kg .they work well and when its time for the billies I go down to 10kg line. They work well and dont hit you back pocket.

if your happy spending $500

if your happy spending $500 id suggest going for penn internationals  in the 30 range (vsw or vsx) but there are some shimano reels like the tld30 and 50 that would do the job too.

TLD's & Tyrnos' will do fine

TLD's & Tyrnos' will do fine for what you're fishing for. Then start to look at the higher end reels with more features should you really get into game fishing.

I think for 10 and even 15kg

Tue, 2009-12-08 17:57

I think for 10 and even 15kg gamefishing, the TLD 20 and a 30 will be more than suitable. At 1/3rd drag setting that's 3.3 and 6.6kg respectively - my bream reel does about that much.

It's my belief you don't really need a Tiagra or International if you're running that kind of line class. Just ask yourself if its for the bling and I think you will figure out the answer on your own.

for the value for money look at the tyrnos, penn inters will be out of the price range of that, but are my choice personally, for another choice theres also the ajking trolling reels with the 30 size being 2 speed and coming in at only $400, good value and even has a ali power t bar handle

Which Reel

Tue, 2009-12-08 20:14

Alutecnos, is it worth it.  There have been concerns wrt the drag systems on their reels and similar concerns wrt those nice looking roller guides on 50 and 80lb rods collapsing forward under pressure.  With 10 -15kg line this is unlikely to be a factor tho.  But yes they look good.

Quite frankly I agree with DazSamFishing wrt Dampier waters.   Get the drags serviced / upgraded on the existing reels you have and you're sweet.
