Replacing trebles with a single hook - looking for hook suggestions
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2010-08-12 07:59
After having several tailor throw my Richter plug recently, I am going to replace all the trebles with a single hook set-up.
Can anyone suggest a preference for the hooks I should replace them with, or a different hook set-up?
Will taking the trebles off effect the balance of the lure?
Many thanks,
Colin Hay

I recently swapped all my plugs over to mustad hoodlums some are set up back to back and singles have not had the chance to use them yet but i believe the will help keep me hooked up.I also found to keep you keep the rod tip as low as possible will stop the tailor jumping and losing fish

An even better choice is the Decoy Sergeant JS-1. The eye is inline, pretty sure the hoodlum is 90° out from the gape.

I've tried those hooks, but
I've tried those hooks, but I dont really like the hookup rate on them. The gape of the hook point is a fair bit narrower than the hook, so its curved in, and it might have something to do with it not sticking so easily?
On richter plugs, the loop is flat anyways, so a 90degree eye is a better option if you want to keep it balanced/keeled. If the tow eye is vertical, you can run two hooks, or two split rings anyways. You can also run a short length of jigging kevlar (just a cm or two) and that should give a lot of flexibility to prevent the lure from being thrown.
I've used sj41's in preference, but have also used hoodlums and also owner occys. The offset eye actually holds it 'in line' but not sure they're ideal (though you can put two on facing each other and they fit together neatly)

I was going to go that path
I was going to go that path but couldn't justify double the price on hooks for tailor.

Tailor
If tailor are what you enjoy catching, an $8.00 investment in hooks isn't really going to break the bank, and if it results in more landed fish all the better!!

you can reduce you catch
you can reduce you catch loss by adding a swivel in the hook end, so the hook doesnt twist off the fish mouth under pressure.

As hlokk is pointing out I
As hlokk is pointing out I used to rig them similar, I grabbed a heap of richters over east many years ago (I assume when they came out). Speaking to the bloke at the fishing convention he told me to get rid of the trebles as they drop fish. Suggested that you run essentially assist hooks at the back but there was no jiggy jig back then. I attached a solid ring to the back and then using heavy flurocarbon (can't remember might have been 120) and either snelled 2 hooks back to back or had 2 free flowing off the solid ring. My hook ups were solid, no problems! Had an experiment with a mate up north casting to GT's around 10-15kg, I never dropped one but he lost quite a few on the treble

Just add a rear assist? I
Just add a rear assist? I caught a tailor on this a few months ago and actually hooked it on the front hook. Was hoping to hook some salmon to see wether they stayed connected better with this setup but no luck.

that setup will work fine
that setup will work fine since the braid can spin many times over before its will pose any threat of twisting the hook off the fishes mouth and its probaly better then the swivel setup for efficientcy.

Decoy Jigging Single JS-2
We use the JS-2 hooks to replace the trebles on the stickbaits and poppers. The hookup rate hasn't dropped nor did it change the action of the lures which are weighted lures.
We sell the whole range of sizes to suit a variety of lures.

Anyone tried recurve hooks
on lures or plugs? Their shape would suggest they may hang in there more than 'standard' hooks but could have a reduced hook up rate.
