Reel Maintenance

Need some info please. Thought I would service the Pflueger Salt 080SW reel and wanting to know when should the carbon washers be replaced. They were contaminated with salt but wiped off pretty clean.

Is there a supplier in Perth that sells these carbon washers?

I highly doubt it. Your beat bet might be to cut some of your own from carbontex sheet (make sure correct thickness)

I reckon you will get away with just cleaning them unless there is signs of great physical damage.

Hi Tom M, you can buy CF sheets on line, they fit into a 8x4 envolope, 0.5 mm thick & 1 mm thick, cut your own, use a teflon grease on each washer, smear on very lightly, then softly wipe the grease of, this will keep you CF washers much cooler & also give a much smoother start up, your old washers should be good to use, you can wash them with brake cleaner or Carb cleaner, good luck, we want to see pic of what you catch, cheers Don.

Hi again Tom M, also when servicing reels always, dip your screws in Yamaha marine grease, it never dries out like a lot of greases, also if you have alloy frames & Stailess steel screws, you will get a chemical reation with that match, so gearse your screws as soon as you can, even with new reels, take one screw out at a time, as they can be different lengths, that way you will not get the mixed up, cheers Don.
